Canola TV: Croplan Canola Products Perform Well For Producers
With the winter canola season over for this year, planning for next year takes center stage. Justin Stejskal of Croplan recently assessed the performance of his company’s products and talked about what producers could expect next year.

“We’ve got four varieties right now that we feel are very strong varieties. Two of those are SU tolerant varieties which are very important in Oklahoma soils. And also we feel like we have the best genetic diversity and also the maturity diversity of any other company out there as far as Round-Up ready varieties go. From earlier varieties to later maturing varieties, it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of maybe a ten- to 14-day difference as far as maturity goes. We have a lot that we can offer growers out there depending on their unique situations.”

Stejskal says he’s had good reports from producers about the performance of Croplan varieties this past season.

“Overall, the results we have heard have been very, very exciting. Producers are very happy with it, especially in situations where they were fortunate enough to get timely rainfalls and get a good stand last fall and get the crop off to a good start. We’re very, very happy with those results.”

He said various field trials have yielded positive data.

“Our two varieties, 115 and 125W are still very, very consistent performers. That’s evidenced by looking at the OSU trials and some other field trials out there.”

He also pointed to recent pH studies in which Croplan products performed very well.

“It’s kind of exciting to see some of our varieties perform as well as they did in the lower pHs all the way down to 4.0, which is definitely not ideal for any crop out there. It goes to show our varieties have some good pH tolerance to them also.”

Stejskal says producers reported good consistent yields even though Croplan products were not always at the top of each and every variety test.

“We’re not going to have the plot winner every time and if you look at the results over the last several years, there’s a lot of plot winners out there. And, so, if you plant the plot variety every year, you’re going to be planting a lot of different varieties. “

Stejskal says his company’s research is ongoing and is continuing in the company’s test plots all across the country-and beyond.

“One thing we do have out there, too, is our Answer Plot system. We have somewhere around 200 Answer Plots across the United States plus four other countries. We have three plots here in Oklahoma based strictly on winter canola and winter wheat. “

He said the Croplan will have two Answer Plots in Oklahoma next year near Kingfisher and Apache. He said the program gives the company a great opportunity to continue to develop its products.

“It gives us the opportunity not only to do research trials, but it also gives us the opportunity to basically go in there and find answers to stuff. Test different kinds of cropping systems, different types of population studies, nutrition. We’ve got some demonstration areas where we can go in there and dig up plants and take a look at how the plant is responding. And we also have the research trials portion where we basically treat those with kid gloves and try to get the maximum yield we can out of it.
