From the 2011 Cattle Industry Convention- We Visit with Cattlemen's Beef Board Member Terry Detrick
Wed, 02 Feb 2011 12:57:58 CST
The President of American Farmers & Ranchers, Terry Detrick of Ames, Oklahoma is one of six cattle producers who represent Oklahoma producers on the national board that oversees the beef checkoff. The Cattlemen's Beef Promotion And Research Board, usually referred to as the Cattlemen's Beef Board or CBB, consists of 106 members, including domestic beef, dairy and veal producers, as well as importers of beef and beef products.
Each Beef Board member is appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture from nominations submitted by certified nominating organizations. The nominating organizations represent beef and dairy producers in each state or region. Thirty-seven states have individual members serving on the Board. The remainder of states are divided into three regions.
We talked with Detrick about some of the key projects that the beef checkoff is currently invested in- and his thoughts on the effectiveness of those efforts. We also talk about needing to show producers out in the country the value of the checkoff which could lay the groundwork to ask cattlemen to approve a second dollar for promotion, education and research on behalf of the cattle industry.
