OCA Hosting Ranch Rodeo This Weekend at Lazy E With Governor Stitt & Secretary Arthur Posting The Nights Colors
|
This Friday and Saturday, the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association is hosting their 36th Annual Ranch Rodeo, set to be held at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie.
Starting the night with a Grand Entrance, Governor Kevin Stitt and Secretary of Agriculture, Blayne Arthur, will be posting the night’s colors on horseback.
“We are incredibly appreciative of the Governor’s support for the agriculture community as we raise funds to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation,” said Sec. Arthur. “This is always a fantastic event put on by the OCA and I am eager to see the turnout!”
The OCA Ranch Rodeo will feature 12 Oklahoma ranch teams all vying for bragging rights, but also with the goal of supporting the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Coined as the “Cowboys Helping Kids” event, OCA has raised more than $531,000 to help children over the past 12 years.

Latest U.S. Drought Monitor Shows Worsening Conditions In The West, Southwest And Western Iowa
|
Reviewing the latest U.S. Drought Monitor Update map shows some improvement for Oklahoma but degrading conditions for the western U.S. as well as western Iowa.
There is little good news from the west and southwest U.S. as we saw intensification of drought caused by continued hot, dry conditions topped by an historic heat wave gripping the region.
There has been virtually no help from a weak monsoonal season as Arizona and New Mexico have experienced less than 50 percent of normal precipitation since the season started.
Drought conditions in west Texas have also deteriorated and a persistent short-term deficit is showing up in Iowa.
Texas saw the introduction of Exceptional Drought (D4) in the Trans Pecos region in the far southwest. This is impacting everything from rangeland to crops.
Specifically, for Oklahoma, areas of drought intensified in the extreme southwestern area where farmers and ranchers are reporting dry stock tanks and deteriorating pasture and range conditions.
According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, from January 1 to August 18, southwestern Oklahoma has experienced more than 30 days of temperatures exceeding 100 degrees F. Harmon County has now been engulfed by Extreme Drought (D3).

2020 Angus Convention Simplified to 137th Annual Meeting
|
The American Angus Association® has made the difficult decision to reformat the 2020 Angus Convention originally scheduled for Nov. 7-9 in Kansas City, Missouri. Considering the current gathering restrictions created by COVID-19, modifications were necessary to balance the health of attendees and the need to conduct the business of the Association. The event will be a two-day meeting on Nov. 8-9 and will continue the long tradition of holding an annual meeting of delegates that has occurred since the inception of the Association in 1883. The National Angus Tour and trade show portion of the event have been canceled and the number of educational sessions will be reduced but virtual options for members and attendees will be offered.
“The health and safety of Association members, guests and staff remains our top priority,” said Mark McCully, Association CEO. “While no technology can replace the value of an in-person gathering, we believe offering virtual attendance options this year is the responsible thing to do. We plan to offer a modified format, allowing for both an in-person annual meeting and a virtual educational experience for those who would like to join from home.”
Socially distanced educational sessions, an awards dinner and fundraiser will be hosted on Sunday, Nov. 8. Guests who register online can partake in the virtual educational sessions held throughout the two-day event. Association leadership will provide several updates and educational workshops. Each day will be headlined with keynote speakers to inspire attendees to advance their operation.

Trump Water Rule Now Being Contested In Court, Forcing NCBA To Defend Government Rule, Says NCBA's Scott Yager
|
The Navigable Waters Protection Rule, the Trump administration’s replacement for the Obama era WOTUS rule went into effect June 22 and the focus since has turned to the courtroom where so-called “blue” states are attempting to overturn the Trump rule.
Scott Yager, Chief Environmental Counsel of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, recently talked with me about that courtroom battle.
The Trump administration repealed WOTUS in September of 2019 and all this has now gone to a courtroom battle, Yager said.
I think there are about 13 different court challenges in blue states trying to knock it down in court, Yager said. If you can kill it in court then you cast doubt on its legal validation, he said.
It clouds the whole issue and that is the strategy being used by environmental activists in the blue states, Yager said.
The NCBA, along with other like-minded trade groups, are strategically intervening in these court cases to shore up the defense of the rule.

Commentary from NFU President, Rob Larew: We Need a Strong Postal Service after the Election, Too
|
In the latest issue of the "Daily Younger" Rob Larew, President of the National Farmers Union, writes a commentary on the need of a strong postal service after the election too. He writes:
Following national outrage over the removal of mail sorting machines and public mailboxes, the elimination of overtime for letter carriers, and other cost cutting measures that could severely delay the distribution of mail, U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy backtracked, indicating that all operational changes would be suspended until after the presidential election – at which point he will presumably continue his efforts to dismantle the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). If he succeeds, the consequences could be catastrophic for all Americans, particularly those who live in rural areas.
To be sure, rural voters were cautiously relieved by the news, as it will protect their ability to participate in the democratic process. Many rural communities are too remote and too sparsely populated to support their own polling places, giving residents the choice to either drive significant distances to the nearest voting site or submit a mail-in ballot. For people who are disabled, don’t own a car, or can’t take hours off of work to drive to the polls, in-person voting may be especially challenging. And in the midst of the pandemic, mail-in ballots may be the safest option for elderly and immunocompromised individuals – both of whom are more likely to live in rural areas – to exercise their right to vote.

Oklahoma receives EPA Grant to Improve Water Quality
|
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded the Oklahoma Office of the Secretary of Energy and Environment $130,000 to improve impaired waters and protect unimpaired waters across the state. The program is designed for watershed management planning agencies and departments to develop and implement water quality management plans.
“Protecting our nation’s water bodies and providing access to clean and safe drinking water is a top priority for the Trump Administration and EPA,” said EPA Regional Administrator Ken McQueen. “This grant will assist the state of Oklahoma in protecting vital water resources across the state. By working with our state partners to improve and protect water bodies, we are ensuring our valuable water sources are drinkable and safe.”
The funds will support Oklahoma’s Water Quality Planning programs while increasing public awareness and engagement on the need for water quality protection and improvement. The funds will be used to assess water quality, identify and protect sensitive, impaired or threatened water bodies and will help ensure better storm water management practices in the future. EPA awarded the grant through the Fiscal Year 2020 Clean Water Act Section 604(b) program. Over past three years EPA awarded Oklahoma over $390,000 through the 604 (b) program.

Not One More Vet Is Racing Around the World to Raise Awareness of Veterinary Suicide
|
To help raise awareness of veterinary suicide and promote well-being within the veterinary community, Not One More Vet (NOMV) is inviting everyone to join the Race Around the World, which will take place from Sept. 1 to Nov. 10, 2020. The goal is to accumulate 25,000 miles/40,000 kilometers representing the circumference of the Earth and illustrating NOMV’s goal to reach veterinary professionals around the world. Donations to NOMV go toward some of our key programs, including our large peer support network that seeks to reduce isolation and provide personal support from caring and understanding peers, educational leadership programs, and our work with the University of Tennessee and Auburn University to develop a revolutionary online crisis support system specifically designed for veterinary professionals providing leadership.
Since 2014, NOMV has been pioneering online peer-to-peer support and mentorship, reaching over 26,000 veterinarians, support staff and veterinary students from around the world. In addition, NOMV is pioneering work on a revolutionary online crisis support system, leading the way in wellness education and focusing on meaningful research into mental health within the veterinary profession.
COVID-19 has created an elevated sense of urgency in providing wellness resources to those in the veterinary profession dealing with additional stresses due to the global pandemic. We are seeing unprecedented levels of workload, abuse and bullying as essential workers and veterinary professionals must balance their own needs — and the needs of their families — with their work.
