Latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map Shows Drought Conditions Increasing For The Far West, Southwest, Parts of Oklahoma And Iowa
|
Extensive areas of red (D3 Extreme) and dark red (D4 Exceptional) shades of drought are now covering many regions of the west, southwest and central Rocky Mountains, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor map.
On this week’s map drought intensified due to continued hot temperatures and mounting precipitation deficits.
The tropical storms and hurricanes moving in off the Gulf Coast this week will have little impact on much of the seriously dry regions of the country.
There is growing concern for dryness and extreme drought in Iowa, a traditional strong area for corn and soybean production. The dryness has extended this week to the northern High Plains and along the northern corn belt.
For Oklahoma the extreme drought concerns have shifted from the Panhandle to the southwest where 4-to-6-inch rainfall deficits since June 1 exist.
Most of Harmon County and parts of Jackson, Greer, Beckham and Roger Mills Counties are colored with shades of extreme drought this week.
Statewide, 62.46 percent of Oklahoma has no drought concerns. Last week that number was 65 percent, so drought concerns have increased in coverage by almost 3 percent.
Extreme drought designation has increased slightly from .46 percent to 1.33 percent.

COVID-19 and China Key Factors in Latest FAPRI Analysis of US Agriculture
|
The University of Missouri’s Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute's latest baseline report reflects corn losses stemming from the derecho in Iowa earlier this month. FAPRI released its August baseline report Wednesday. According to the report, corn-planted area in 2020 is projected to be 92.0 million acres, a sharp decline from March intended acres. A modest downward adjustment in Iowa corn yields, given the derecho event, pushes the production estimate 203 million bushels lower than USDA's estimate to 15.075 billion, a record production volume. Carryout stocks sharply increase, and corn farm prices are expected to fall to $3.24 per bushel.
Meanwhile, projected soybean-planted area rose to 83.8 million acres in 2020/21, up sharply from last year. Soybean stocks hold steady in 2020/21 as a strong growth in exports is offset by a rebound in production, in part, on above-trend yields. Farm prices for soybeans hit a recent low of $8.24 for 2020/21.
The think tank believes that wheat prices will remain largely unchanged and will average around $4.80 per bushel- "given large global supplies and demand-side competition with corn. Wheat acreage continues to decline- falling below 44 million acres- on relative returns to corn and soybeans."

Elanco's Sara Place Says Converting To a Vegan Diet Would Not Improve The Environment
|
If every U.S. citizen went on a vegan diet it would have very little impact on the global environment, says Dr. Sara Place, chief sustainability officer with Elanco Animal Health, Inc.
The former Oklahoma State University animal scientist and NCBA staff person, was recently interviewed by KC Sheperd, Radio Oklahoma Ag Network associate farm director.
You can’t eat your way out of climate change, Place said.
It doesn’t make a big difference if you substitute your diet, she said.
Place noted a recent study that focused on the issue of every American going on a vegan diet.
What would happen is we would slightly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 2.6 percent, Place said.
But the tradeoff is you would have no vitamin B12 in our food supply, and that’s a key essential nutrient, she said. Without it, we would not be alive.

Lucas Cosponsors Saving Rural Hospitals from Closure Act, Supporting Oklahoma’s Rural Hospitals
|
Congressman Frank Lucas (OK-03) announced today he recently cosponsored Congressman Jason Smith’s (MO-08) Saving Rural Hospitals from Closure Act, which authorizes the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to take certain measures, including forgiving all Medicare accelerated payments for rural hospitals that are experiencing severe financial hardship.
“Having previously visited Oklahoma’s rural hospitals before the coronavirus pandemic, it’s clear our state’s rural hospitals provide vitally-needed services to our small, rural towns. Rural hospitals are the backbone of communities across the nation, and sadly, last year, more rural hospitals closed due to increased financial hardships than any other year in the previous decade,” said Congressman Lucas.
“Congress must help our rural hospitals weather the pandemic’s economic uncertainty by allowing the Secretary of HHS to give hospitals the flexibility they need in order to remain financially sound. We must not allow those who call rural America home to lose these life-saving resources and access to general health care needs. I strongly urge my colleagues to continue their support for America’s hospitals and encourage them to provide rural hospitals the necessary resources and funding in order to help them weather the current economic hardships.”

Free Electronic Cattle Ear Tags Offered- State Vet Dr. Rod Hall Explains
|
If you or someone you know would like to start transitioning to the electronic Tags, Oklahoma State University Veterinarian Dr. Rod Hall Says, "We have a good stock (greater than 20,000 each) of the orange electronic brucellosis vaccination ear tags and the white electronic ID tags that can be used for TB testing, Brucellosis Testing, or official ID purposes for CVIs.
The only cost is a small shipping charge. This is a great opportunity to begin transitioning to the electronic tags. As a reminder, the orange brucellosis vaccination tags can only be ordered by a veterinarian to be used in clients’ heifers. The white tags can be ordered by veterinarians or producers and are intended to be used as official identification for breeding or replacement cattle. They are not to be used for culls, stockers, or feeder cattle.
Please see the attached order form, fill it out, and send back to us and we’ll get them out to you. Please let your cow/calf clients know about this offer and encourage them to take advantage of this offer to get their herds electronically identified."

More CFAP Funding Possible after Labor Day
|
Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue this week hinted at more Coronavirus Food Assistance Program aid for farmers on the horizon. Perdue confirmed that the Department of Agriculture is considering “shortly after Labor Day” offering a second wave of CFAP relief during a press call.
Funding for the next round of payments would come from the additional $14 billion Congress allocated in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act to replenish the Commodity Credit Corporation account after July 1, 2020.
Many agriculture groups say more relief is needed for farmers and ranchers as the first wave of CFAP will close September 11 when the sign up period closes.
In addition, farm groups are lobbying for even more aid, like the $20 billion included in the failed Senate aid package last month. Lawmakers are expected to try again in September to pass another round of economic stimulus, but it is uncertain if agriculture will be included.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has rejected comments made by White House officials- saying the House Democrats wanted a minimum of $2.2 trillion dollars included in any package that might come up in the immediate future.
