New Report Examines Cattle Market Issues & Solutions
|
A new report unveiled today by the American Farm Bureau Federation provides an in-depth examination of the causes and price implications resulting from extreme market volatility in the cattle industry. It also sets the stage to explore policy solutions.
The Cattle Market Working Group, comprised of 10 state farm Bureau presidents, spent more than two months investigating factors that led to market disruptions following the Holcomb packing plant fire and the COVID-19 pandemic. They invited input and consultation from government and university experts, among others.
The report is designed to equip state and county Farm Bureau organizations with deep insight and policy considerations as Farm Bureau leaders debate policy recommendations for 2021.
“Our cattle producers suffered a one-two punch with the fallout from the Holcomb fire and the COVID-19 pandemic,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. “The prices families were paying at the grocery store went up, but the prices paid to farmers dropped through the floor. That’s not fair to consumers or producers. We must work toward a more stable, resilient food supply chain that can better endure unforeseen challenges so we can keep America’s pantry stocked while ensuring farmers are paid a fair price for their products.

OSU's Kim Anderson Says Grain Prices Have been Moving in the Right Direction
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets weekly on SUNUP.
This week Dr. Anderson says grain prices have really been moving in the right direction the last month, "Lets start the second week in August, with the leader soybeans. Soybean futures contract price moved from $8.70 to $10.40. That's $1.70 cent increase or a 20% increase in soybean prices. Corn prices they moved on the futures from $3.20 to 3.75, a 55 cent move or 17% move there. Milo, or sorghums moving about 90 to 95 cents higher than corn.
And then you've got wheat, that wheat futures contract moved from $4.25 cents to $5.05 it broke that $5 mark there just for a little while. That's 80 cents or 19% price increase. Current wheat prices around $4.50 cents a bushel. To hear more from Dr. Anderson, click or tap below.

Latest U.S. Drought Map Shows Drought Expansion In The West and Rocky Mountains As The Fall Outlook Does Not Offer Relief
|
Rangeland and pastures are significantly stressed across wide swaths of the southern and western High Plains including much of eastern New Mexico and Colorado, western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
As a result of continued dryness in those areas, the latest U.S. Drought Monitor map is showing modest drought expansion.
The number one concern now for many of these areas is the lack of soil moisture for newly planted winter wheat.
For Oklahoma, another week of dry weather for the western half of the state has added to the concerns going into the fall and winter months.
The abnormally dry (D0) and severe drought (D2) categories have slightly increased in Oklahoma while other categories remain unchanged from last week.
However- when you compare this week's map to the start of summer- we had 56% of the state abnormally dry or in drought- this latest map we have above stands at just 26%.

OSU's Dr. Derrell Peel Says Livestock Markets Have Recovered From The Pandemic As Producers Now Hope For Good Winter Wheat Pasture
|
Livestock markets have mostly recovered from the pandemic-induced downturn and now Oklahoma producers are hoping for a good winter wheat pasture grazing season.
That overview was presented by Dr. Derrell Peel, OSU Extension livestock economist, during a recent interview on the K-State Radio Network.
The well-known livestock economist said beef exports are once again strong after the downturn.
The weekly data suggest we’ve had a pretty good recovery in beef exports, Peel said. We had severe disruptions in May and June. Since then we’ve seen pretty good recovery in the major markets, he said.
Beef imports are also increasing.
The July data showed a sharp spike in beef imports, triggered by the disruption in flow of products during April and May, Peel said.

Ag Groups Call for More Resources to Protect Employees, Communities from Coronavirus
|
Over 160 farm, food and agriculture organizations today sent a letter to the White House Coronavirus Task Force calling for the federal government to take additional steps and devote new resources to help farmers, ranchers and growers across the country protect their employees from the novel coronavirus.
“Farmers continue to do our best to provide a safe workspace for all employees, promoting safety on and off the farm. Across the agriculture sector, employers have instituted best practices including social distancing, enhanced hygiene and sanitation procedures, employee training, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE),” the letter states. “With the broad strain on PPE availability, testing, and other resources, however, we ask for your help as we continue to promote the health and safety of our farm employees and rural communities.”
Among the actions the groups recommend that the Task Force take are:
• Adapting farmworker housing requirements to facilitate greater social distancing and allow for the use of alternative housing structures;
• Ensuring that COVID-19 testing resources are accessible to agricultural employers and their employees and that results are available in a timely fashion;
• Helping farmers offset the costs of COVID-19 mitigation expenses, while maintaining existing farm programs, by increasing Commodity Credit Corporation funds;
• Prioritize PPE and future vaccine distribution for the food and fiber supply chain;

Conaway Introduces Digital Commodity Regulatory Framework
|
House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member K. Michael Conaway (TX-11) introduced the Digital Commodity Exchange Act of 2020, legislation that creates a single, opt-in national regulatory framework for digital commodity trading platforms under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
“The Digital Commodity Exchange Act (DCEA) provides a clear path forward to improve the regulation of digital commodities,” said Rep. Conaway. “Digital commodity trading platforms are currently required to comply with a complicated labyrinth of 53 state and territory regulatory frameworks, hindering the ability for newcomers to enter the market. The DCEA provides responsible federal oversight of trading platforms and critical consumer protections, while also paving the way for innovators to develop new digital commodity projects.
“I’m excited by the support this bipartisan legislation has received in Congress and from those in the industry. I look forward to developing a legal framework and providing clarity for fintech innovators and strong protections for users of digital commodities.”
