FAPC predicts Top Food Trends for 2021
|
It’s been a long 365 days filled with uncertainty and change. The one constant, however, was a continued love for both food and cooking across the nation.
As the pandemic shifted lives, it also shifted the tastes and preferences of American consumers, sparking actions likely to change the food industry next year.
Change is inevitable - pandemic or not - and is a major force when it comes to food trends, said Andrea Graves, business planning and marketing specialist for the Oklahoma State University Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center.
“Businesses need to pay attention to trends in order to find new growth opportunities and their target audiences,” Graves said. “Understanding these trends helps businesses stay ahead of upcoming change, whether it is regulatory or a new flavor profile. In most cases, consumers drive the trends and are looking for products and companies that are meeting their needs and lifestyles.”
Take a look at the top 10 trends for 2021, predicted by FAPC.

National Pork Board Study Outlines Opportunities to Diversify Pork Exports
|
As U.S. pork exports continue to break records in 2020, new reports from the National Pork Board demonstrate opportunities that may diversify U.S. pork exports in Vietnam and the Philippines. The reports also show how African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in Asia have impacted both countries’ pork industries and related supply chains.
The two new pork market assessments were prepared by Gira, a global research firm, with funding from the Pork Checkoff and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service Emerging Markets Program. They share critical insights on how U.S. pork can position itself for long-term success in the Vietnamese and Philippine markets - two Asian markets with increased demand for pork consumption anticipated in the next decade.
“The annual Pork Checkoff producer survey identified diversification of U.S. pork exports as a top priority,” said Norman Bessac, vice president of international marketing for the Checkoff. “These reports will help exporters position the U.S. pork industry as a supplier of choice in both countries, helping to expand our export options and create even greater value for the more than 60,000 pig farmers here.”

KSU Vet Dr. Jordan Gebhardt Talks About Bio Exclusion in The Feed Industry
|
Keeping a disease out of our herd is easier than treating it after the fact and that is why Dr. Jordan Gebhardt with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University is focusing his research on biosecurity in the feed industry.
Dr. Gebhardt was a speaker at the recent KSU virtual swine day.
Biosecurity for the feed industry is very important, he said. A key part of that is something he calls bio exclusion.
Bio exclusion is a portion of biosecurity and it (biosecurity) is understanding how certain viruses spread among animals, he said.
If we have a population of susceptible animals, bio exclusion is what we do to prevent the virus from coming into contact with the animals, he said.
If we have a feed mill with trucks going from farm to farm, bio exclusion is what we do to prevent the virus from coming into the mill to start with, he said.
We think it’s a lot easier to keep it out in the first place than treat it later, Gebhardt said.

Gap Inc. joins U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol to use only 100% Sustainably-Sourced Cotton by 2025
|
Today leading global apparel retailer Gap Inc. has joined the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol as part of its integrated sustainability strategy and to help it achieve its commitment to use only 100% sustainably-sourced cotton by 2025.
Gap Inc.’s target of sourcing 100% of its cotton from more sustainable sources by 2025 is set across its collection of purpose-led lifestyle brands including Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta.
The Trust Protocol will help Gap Inc. meet this goal by providing verified data on the sustainability practices used on U.S. cotton farms. Participating cotton growers will benefit from data-driven insights and best practices from across the industry, as well as a stronger connection to brands asking for sustainably-grown cotton. The Trust Protocol opened for membership in October 2020 and provides brands and retailers with the critical assurance they need to prove that the cotton in their supply chain is more responsibly grown.

USDA Engages Public for Input on Water Quantity in the West
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced it is seeking public input about water quantity in the west related to existing Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs. Acting NRCS Chief Kevin Norton will host a virtual, open public listening session Thursday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.
If additional time is deemed necessary to hear all input, a second session will be held Friday, December 18 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.
“We have heard from stakeholders that we need to do more to address water quantity issues in the western U.S.,” said Acting Chief Norton. “This listening session will enable us to hear directly from people at the local level on how to improve our programs and operations.”
Norton also noted that USDA’s roles as Co-Chair of the National Drought Resilience Partnership (NDRP) and in the newly established Water Subcabinet place greater emphasis on the importance of western water quantity issues.
This virtual listening session will allow stakeholders to provide feedback on the following questions:
· For agricultural producers: What is the most pressing water-related issue that may constrain or currently constrains your operations?

It May Be USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack...Again
|
President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate former Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to return to the post he held for eight years under the Obama administration. Click here for his Bio from those Obama years.
Major news organizations reported Tuesday evening that Biden is expected to announce Vilsack again as Agriculture secretary. Vilsack became the safe, comfortable choice for Biden after competition for the USDA job set off a battle between two wings of the Democratic Party.
Vilsack, who turns 70 next week, was former President Barack Obama's longest-serving cabinet member, leading USDA from 2009 to 2107. He was a two-term governor of Iowa from 1999 to 2007.
The selection for the Agriculture secretary position has become one of the more high-profile battles for Biden's cabinet. Several progressive groups, including unions and Black leaders in Congress have been backing Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, a member of the House Agriculture Committee to take the top job at USDA. The Ohio Congresswoman seems to be on track to the head of HUD- the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
