U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), incoming Chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, today announced the Committee voted to favorably report former Secretary Tom Vilsack to be U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Vilsack may now be considered by the full U.S. Senate for confirmation.

Vilsack Breezes Through Confirmation Hearing as he Nears Expected Full Senate Confirmation Vote
|
Following a two-hour overwhelmingly friendly Senate Agriculture Committee hearing Tuesday, Tom Vilsack’s nomination for Agriculture Secretary has been advanced to the Senate for what is expected to be a quick confirmation. You can hear an overview of that hearing anchored by Sam Knipp by clicking on the button below this story.
Touching on a variety of topics ranging from climate change policies to foreign trade to livestock market transparency, Vilsack addressed questions from the committee via a virtual video connection.
Vilsack, who was USDA chief during the Obama Administration, opened the hearing by quoting Robert Kennedy about “Why Not Moments” in agriculture.
He highlighted four key “why not” moments: climate change, food security and nutrition insecurity, competitive markets and USDA fair treatment.
During the Q and A session with committee members, he talked about working with the U.S. Trade Representative’s office to promote trade and implement free trade agreements.
Vilsack said he shared President Biden’s net zero emission policy to provide a competitive edge in global markets.

OKFB examines Ag, rural issues in Stitt's State of the State
|
Gov. Kevin Stitt highlighted a number of key issues for Oklahoma Farm Bureau members in his State of the State address on Monday, Feb. 1.
“The state of our state is strong because we are resilient and well-positioned for a bright future,” Stitt said, as he began his address to state lawmakers.
Most notably for farmers and ranchers, Stitt committed to protecting Oklahoma agriculture producers as he announced the tenets of his legislative agenda, dubbed “The People’s Agenda.”
“We’ll fight for our farmers and ranchers and the Oklahoma way of life,” Stitt said.
The governor’s agenda also includes keeping taxpayer burdens low, supporting the oil and gas industry, and enacting business friendly policies.

New Law Will Help Livestock Sellers Recover Funds When a Dealer's Check Bounces Says LMA's Chelsea Good
|
A little known section of the Covid relief package passed at the end of 2020 could provide relief for victims of unscrupulous cattle dealers said Chelsea Good, vice president of government and industry affairs for the Livestock Marketing Association.
The Livestock Dealers Statutory Trust was signed into law as part of that legislative package and Good explained to me how the law will work.
What that does is provide extra protection for sellers of livestock to a livestock dealer in the unfortunate event of a payment default, Good said.
Under the new law unpaid sellers of livestock have the legal right to reclaim that livestock from the dealer or if the dealer has resold the livestock, the unpaid sellers of the livestock will have first priority in the proceeds from those livestock, she said.
I think it will really improve the livestock recovery, Good said.
It’s not uncommon for a livestock seller to discover a “bad check” after the livestock have traded hands several times.

Checkoff Scientist Helps Pizza Hut Launch Detroit-Style Offering
|
Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) onsite scientist Nitin Joshi has helped Pizza Hut launch handcrafted Detroit-Style pizza nationwide.
Joshi, vice president of product development, said the new offering has 50 percent more cheese than a similar rectangular pizza on the chain’s menu.
The project was in the works for more than a year and began from a brainstorm session between DMI and Pizza Hut team members. The group often meets to determine “what is next,” Joshi said, and they recognized growing consumer interest and trends in Detroit-style pizza.
Each pizza is rectangular-shaped and features cheese all the way to the edges to create a crispy, caramelized crust. The pizza is loaded with toppings and finished with a vine-ripened tomato sauce. Joshi said he and the Pizza Hut team experimented and made as many as 600 pizzas before settling on the final product.

From Deep in the Heart- The Need for Rural Broadband is REAL
|
A member of the officer team of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers, Carl Ray Polk, Jr., writes a very articulate plea for more robust broadband in the rural parts of the TSCRA area- - here's a couple of the paragraphs from his editorial the cattle group has just released:
"Broadband is now an essential service, and there has been a dramatic shift toward virtual solutions for educators, healthcare providers and businesses across the country in recent years. The business of producing cattle is shifting online too. We are increasingly monitoring markets from our computers, using online auctions to buy and sell cattle, managing our data in the cloud and obtaining essential goods and services from the online marketplace.
"It’s becoming more difficult for cattle producers to stay competitive without broadband access, and it’s also impacting our families. Without broadband, our children miss out on vital educational resources and opportunities. As a result, broadband availability is becoming an important factor as young families decide where to put down roots, which often means abandoning rural communities in the process."
You can head over to our website via the link in the button below and read more- and perhaps "borrow" an idea of two from his thoughts to use in talking your lawmaker to remind them how vital it is to increase bandwidth down your rural road as well.

Dr. Glenn Selk on the Third Stage of Calving: Shedding of Fetal Membranes
|
Dr. Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist, offers herd health advice as part of the weekly series known as the "Cow Calf Corner"
Today, Dr. Selk talks about the third stage of calving.
The process of “calving” or parturition in beef cattle is defined by three stages. Stage I occurs about 4 to 24 hours prior to calving. The major event during stage I is the dilation of the cervix. Stage II occurs in about 30 minutes in adult cows and about 1 hour in first calf heifers (when all goes well) and is the time when the calf passes through the birth canal and is delivered into the world.
The third stage of calving is the shedding of the placenta or fetal membranes. In cattle this normally occurs in less than eight to 12 hours. The membranes are considered retained if after 12 hours they have not been shed. In some rare cases, the entire placenta is held in the uterus so there is no exposed portion. This condition may go unnoticed until the cow shows an abnormal uterine discharge or an odor characteristic of tissue degeneration.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is the main reason Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week, bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
Oklahoma State University Junior Amarie Griffeth has a heart for people- and she tells Host KC Sheperd about a need she saw on campus in Stillwater to combat food insecurity. She was a part of a Task force- and out of that students came up with Pete’s Pantry, an anonymous way to help other students on campus needing a helping hand.
Amarie grew up in Cushing, Oklahoma- her dad is in the livestock marketing business, so she has grown up loving being involved in producing food- and she has discovered the joy of providing food to those in need as well. Today's Road Podcast is powered by BancFirst, Loyal to Oklahoma and You.
