OSU's Kim Anderson Gives an update on Forward Contract prices in the Grain Markets.
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets weekly on SUNUP.
This week Dr. Anderson said the prices are pretty volatile this week for harvest delivered commodities, "I had these numbers down there this morning and then I checked the market a little bit later and wheat was up 21 cents so its volatile. You look at wheat now you can forward contract for harvest delivery at about $6. That's a minus 15 underneath that July contract. Corn is at $4.95 and That's also minus 15 under the corn December contract. Sorghum is $5.75, thats 65 cents over that corn December contract. Soybeans at $11.90 Sometimes it hits $12.00, but somewhere in that vicinity of minus 70 under the November soybean contract. And canola is posted at $10.70." February's Brutal Cold Could Impact Breeding Bulls This Spring Says OSU's Mark Johnson
|
The impact of February’s brutal cold is starting to show up in breeding bulls said Dr. Mark Johnson, OSU Associate Professor of Animal Science and supervisor of the OSU Purebred Beef Cattle Center.
During an interview with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays, Johnson said he is concerned about the fertility of herd bulls subjected to prolonged periods of below zero weather.
Your herd bulls had to sleep each night on frozen ground, and we’re concerned about seeing frostbite on the underline of a bull back on his scrotum, Johnson said.
We are hearing stories about bulls not being fertile, he said.
It’s going to be important to have breeding soundness tests on herd bulls before we turn them out this spring, Johnson said.
The damage could be permanent, but Johnson said it’s possible the bull could outlive the damage.
It’s financial devastation if we turn out bulls that don’t get cows bred, Johnson said.
Knowing ahead of time, if we can get those bulls to the vet, examine the semen, look at the eyes, feet and legs and make sure he is structurally sound to go breed cows is an important management step this spring, he said.
The decision to keep a bull requires patience as the vet may determine the bull could improve down the road if he does not check out satisfactorily today, so he may be worth holding onto for future breeding seasons, he said.

U.S. Hard Red Winter Wheat Farmers Looking for Rain
|
Michael Anderson, USW Market Analyst writes in an article for USWHEAT about the need for Rain in our wheat fields.
The 2021/22 U.S. hard red winter (HRW) wheat crop is developing under a range of conditions. However, rain makes grain, so anxious farmers are looking for clouds on the horizon.
Based on the USDA’s Crop Progress reports, issued each week on Mondays, the HRW crop seems to be starting on average footing compared to condition reports at the same time last year. Yet USDA this week reported a 2% drop in the amount of winter wheat rated good and a 3% drop in the amount rated fair, while wheat rated as very poor grew by 16%. Overall, the USDA puts 53% of the U.S. HRW wheat crop between good and excellent conditions, a 2% drop from the week before.
Michael Peters, an Oklahoma HRW producer and U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) Secretary-Treasurer, noted that he had not received more than a half-inch of rain in the last 45 days.

Farmers to Family Food Box Program Comes to an End
|
NMPF Statement on the End of the Farmers to Families Food Box Program , "While the Farmers to Families Food Box program was very helpful last year in responding quickly to both last year’s food supply chain disruptions and the dramatic rise in the number of Americans experiencing food insecurity, it also had its challenges. That’s why we are not surprised by the decision to move beyond the food box program, and in fact, expected it."
“AFBF was surprised to learn of Secretary Vilsack’s decision to end the Farmers to Families Food Box program. The pandemic had a devastating effect on farmers, ranchers and families across the country when schools, cafeterias and restaurants shut down. More than 150 million food boxes were produced and helped America’s families suffering from the hardships caused by COVID-19. The need is still there.

OKFB, County Farm Bureaus donate more than $20,000 to food assistance organizations
|
More than $20,000 was donated to Oklahoma food banks, food pantries and other food assistance programs by 41 county Farm Bureaus and county Women’s Leadership Committees as a part of Oklahoma Farm Bureau’s Community Food Assistance Matching Program.
The program was designed to connect county organizations to their communities by donating to local food assistance programs, which OKFB matched up to $100.
“This past year has been difficult for many across our state, and those of us in agriculture believe feeding fellow Oklahomans is our duty and responsibility,” said Rodd Moesel, OKFB president. “We are proud that so many county Farm Bureaus across the state stepped up to serve those in need in their communities by donating to local food assistance organizations.”

|
During the month of April, the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network and Oklahoma Farm Report is spotlighting the twenty Area Stars of Oklahoma FFA that are among the highest achievers in the organization.
The stars come from the five areas in four categories- Star in Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star in Agribusiness and Star in Production Agriculture.
This week, we spotlight the five area stars in Agribusiness for 2021.
One Star Finalist featured in the coming days from each of the categories, will be named the State Star Award Winner during the 95th Oklahoma State FFA Convention coming up April 27, and 28th in Oklahoma City.
This week, our coverage of the 2021 Oklahoma FFA Star Award Finalists continues with Agribusiness competitor Cooper Thompson of the Adair FFA chapter representing the Northeast Area.
Lawn care and maintenance is the focus of Thompson’s agribusiness project.
Thompson met a professional lawn care expert during a livestock show about five years ago and he helped Thompson get started in the business.
Thompson also credits his father for advice and providing extra labor.
The project has taught him responsibility, the ins and outs of running a business.
The determination it takes to run a business like this has been a great lesson, he said.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is the main reason Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity will dive into these stories each week, bringing you insight into the great things happening in and to rural Oklahoma. We will bring you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
Host KC Sheperd sat down with Dr. Brett Carver, Regents Professor
Wheat Genetics Chair in Agriculture, Wheat Breeding and Genetics in his office on the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater and talked about a variety of subjects- all relating back to his passion for breeding wheat. He offered his take on how the 2021 wheat crop has handled the historic freeze the southern plains dealt with in February of this year, reviewed the wheat varieties that have come out of his program and looked ahead to what might be coming next.
