OSU's Dr. Derrell Peel Says Drop in Boxed Beef Prices Not Unexpected Even as Feedlots Get Closer to Being Current
|
The spread between boxed beef prices and the cash cattle market has narrowed somewhat in recent days and Dr. Derrell Peel, OSU Extension livestock market economist, says the lower boxed beef prices were expected.
Most of the buying is done for the July 4th weekend and we have had a lot of strength here from Memorial Day to this point, Peel said.
He added the market is ready to take a breather as we go into the summer doldrums.
Meanwhile, feedlots are making progress and have worked their way through the backlog of cattle.
The bottom line is Dr. Peel believes we are getting closer to that point where feedlots are current and that will give more bargaining power for cattle producers in the third and fourth quarters. He adds that will allow us to see a more mormal relationship between the price of cattle and wholesale boxed beef values.

US Senate Ag Committee Hearing Examining Markets, Transparency, and Prices from Cattle Producer to Consumer
|
Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow Thursday announced a hearing titled “Examining Markets, Transparency, and Prices from Cattle Producer to Consumer.” The Michigan Democrat, along with the committee’s ranking Republican John Boozman of Arkansas, scheduled the hearing for the afternoon of Wednesday, June 23. Cattle market transparency is a priority for cattle producers as disruptions in the market, along with pandemic-related issues, developed. Legislation, such as the Cattle Market Transparency Act, seeks to correct the disruptions and improve trade for cattle producers. Introduced in March, Farm Bureau Congressional Relations Director Scott Bennett said at the time the legislation would ease frustration in the market by “creating a contract library for producers to compare the terms of their contracts versus others in the industry." In May, a diverse group of farm and cattle organizations came together to focus on cattle market transparency concerns. The issue started growing in 2019 when a fire burned a Tyson plant in Holcomb, Kansas.
The hearing will be streamed and can bd found on the Senate Ag Committee webpage- available here.

Dr. Rosslyn Biggs on the Importance of Internal Parasite Control
|
Dr. Rosslyn Biggs, OSU College of Veterinary Medicine Extension Beef Veterinarian offers herd health advice as part of the weekly series known as the "Cow Calf Corner" published electronically by Dr. Peel, Mark Johnson, Dr. Rosslyn Biggs, and Paul Beck. today Dr. Biggs is talking about internal parasite control.
Internal parasites cause a variety of clinical signs, including weight loss, diarrhea and death. Other, less obvious parasitic signs, (often referred to as subclinical signs), significantly impact producers. The subclinical signs may include things like decreased weaning weights and lower rates of reproduction.
Widespread use of anthelmintics (dewormers) has led to most cattle parasite control programs focusing on maximizing production rather than treating clinical disease. There are three anthelmintics classes available in the United States: the benzimidazoles, the macrocyclic lactones, and an imidazothiazole.
Due to the extensive use of anthelmintics, concern have been raised about the development of parasite resistance leading to loss of product effectiveness. Researchers at OSU are currently investigating Oklahoma cattle herds for parasite resistance.

Statement from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices Final Rule
|
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack released the following statement today in regard to the Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices (OLPP) final rule:
“We intend to reconsider the prior Administration’s interpretation that the Organic Foods Production Act does not authorize USDA to regulate the practices that were the subject of the 2017 Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices (OLPP) final rule.
"I have directed the National Organic Program to begin a rulemaking to address this statutory interpretation and to include a proposal to disallow the use of porches as outdoor space in organic production over time and on other topics that were the subject of the OLPP final rule. We anticipate sending the proposed rule to OMB within six to nine months from the date of the remand. We look forward to receiving public comments on those topics and, after reviewing the comments, USDA will publish a final rule.”
