OSU's Kim Anderson On Wheat Harvest Progress And How Recent Weather Impacts Prices
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Grains Market Analyst Dr. Kim Anderson talks about what is going on in the Wheat Markets. Dr. Anderson says harvest is moving north is about 90 percent complete in Oklahoma. This week Dr. Anderson is talking about wheat harvest progress and wheat prices.
Anderson says prices are choppy, and not just for wheat. The humid and wet weather is affecting price and progress amongst crops, he said..
"I think the market will reflect what is going on with the weather," Anderson said. "Policy comes and policy goes, but the weather is going to determine price."

Plains Grains Sees Oklahoma Wheat Harvest 87 Percent Complete- But Standing Still with Monsoon Conditions
|
During the wheat harvest season, Mark Hodges and Plains Grains release a weekly HRW wheat harvest report- here is the latest report from Hodges, as released on Thursday evening, July first:
"Most of the HRW harvest progress in the central and southern Great Plains this week was made in the first few days of the week as numerous and widespread rainstorms prevailed from midweek through the end of the week.
"The Texas HRW wheat crop is now 81% harvested, with remaining acres to be harvested in Texas being predominately in the northwestern part of the state extending to the Oklahoma state line. Oklahoma, (is now 87% harvested) with remaining areas to be cut being in far northwest Oklahoma and the Panhandle. Kansas, (now 55% complete with harvest) with most remaining acres to be cut located in northern half of Kansas. Rain and its effect on quality continues to be a concern for the remain acres to be harvested in all 3 states."
Click on the button below to read more from the Plains Grains report and to access the PDF that Mark prepares that contains the latest test results, a graphic showing wheat harvest and precipitation data.
Mark pulls together a lot of data weekly- so it's worth your while to check it out.

Kent Bacus, NCBA, Says Biden Trade Policies Different Than Under Trump Administration
|
There are major differences in trade policy with the Biden Administration versus the Trump Administration said Kent Bacus, senior director of international trade and market access for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
The Biden Administration came in and said we want to review everything the U.S. has been engaged in and see if there are any changes that need to be made, Bacus said.
The momentum that we had moving forward has definitely slowed down, he said.
Bacus said under Trump the policy focused on opening new markets and with Biden this is going to be more focused on consensus building and getting everyone on board before we actually engage in further negotiations.
We may see more opportunities to engage in a multilateral approach, Bacus said.

USDA Announces Efforts to Promote Transparency in Product of the USA Labeling
|
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack released the following statement today following the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) vote to strengthen its enforcement of the Made in USA standard:
“Today, the Federal Trade Commission took important steps to enhance its ability to enforce the Made in USA standard. I congratulate the FTC on strengthening this important protection for American consumers. USDA will complement the FTC’s efforts with our own initiative on labeling for products regulated by FSIS, an area of consumer labeling where USDA has a long tradition of protecting consumers from false and misleading labels.
American consumers depend upon accurate, transparent labels to obtain important information about the food they consume. American farmers and ranchers depend upon those same labels to convey information about their products that consumers value and demand. We have taken note of the many comments submitted to USDA and the FTC regarding meat labeling and understand that the current “Product of USA” label on meat products may no longer effectively serve either of those purposes, to the detriment of consumers, producers, and fair and competitive markets.

Latest U.S. Drought Map Shows Continued Expansion in Western and Northern U.S. as Heavy Rains Wipe Out Drought in Oklahoma
|
Record-breaking heat in the Northwest, Great Basin and Northeast lead to expansions of drought conditions according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor update.
Meanwhile, multiple rounds of heavy rain across the Central U.S. dramatically improved drought conditions.
A band of 6-10-plus inches of rain fell from West Texas to northeast Oklahoma, resulting in one and two drought category improvements.
Unfortunately, heavy flooding was also the result of the heavy rains, leading to substantial infrastructure damage in central and eastern Oklahoma.
In Oklahoma, we continue to see reductions in drought coverage this week, as 84.11 percent of the state is drought free. This compares to 75.77 percent last week and 63 percent three months ago.
There are no shades of red (D3 extreme drought) on the Oklahoma map this week and we anticipate additional rainfall amounts this week will lead to a near 100 percent drought free map for Oklahoma next week.

RMA Announces Changes to Small Grains Crop Insurance Provisions
|
Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) announced a final rule that provides wheat growers new options designed to improve crop insurance delivery and risk management options for producers. Specifically, these changes will allow enterprise units by type for wheat, which will enable producers to separately insure all the acres of a type of wheat in the county.
“Crop insurance provides a critical risk management tool for wheat growers and today’s announcement helps provide additional coverage options in areas where both winter and spring wheat are grown,” said NAWG CEO Chandler Goule. “Previously, wheat producers could only get enterprise units for wheat, but this change breaks it out by type and prevents one type of wheat from impacting payments on another. Today’s announcement is welcome news, and NAWG will continue to work with its membership and RMA to provide feedback on how crop insurance can continue to provide additional flexibility and options to protect wheat growers and help manage risk on their operations.

ICYMI: July 4th Cookout Cost Stable Compared to Year Ago
|
U.S. consumers will pay just a few cents less for their favorite Independence Day cookout foods compared to last year, including cheeseburgers, pork chops, chicken breasts, homemade potato salad, strawberries and ice cream, says the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Farm Bureau analysis reveals the average cost of a summer cookout for 10 people remains affordable at $59.50, or less than $6 per person. The cost for the cookout is down 16 cents (less than 1%) from last year, but 8% higher compared to 2019.
Retail price changes for products in the meat case are a bit more nuanced, according to AFBF Economist Veronica Nigh.
“Beef and pork processing plant disruptions that occurred in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been resolved, leading to lower retail ground beef and pork chop prices in 2021 compared to 2020,” Nigh said. “However, consumers looking a bit farther back to compare prices are seeing higher prices for ground beef, pork chops and chicken breasts compared to pre-pandemic (2019) prices. That’s due to continued strong demand for American-grown beef and pork from both U.S. and international consumers.”
