Jarold Callahan with Cattlemen's Congress Proud That This Show is a Cattle Show for Cattle People
|
The President of Express Ranches, Jarold Callahan, was a driving force a little over a year ago when the announcement was made in Denver that the National Western Stock Show would not happen in January of 2021. In a matter of a little more than 60 days, Callahan and other cattle industry leaders worked with the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds management, Oklahoma City management, State leaders, and Tyler Norvell and his staff at the Oklahoma Youth Expo to get the first ever Cattlemen's Congress off the ground, delivering a world class purebred cattle show.
Callahan took a few minutes out of his busy schedule on Thursday morning to go live on Facebook with us. He said the feedback that the Congress leadership team heard from exhibitors was, "do it again."
"Fast forward to this year, the turnout has been awesome,” Callahan said. “The shows and sales that have happened thus far have been superb."
One of the sales that has already happened at the second Cattlemen's Congress is the Bases Loaded Angus Sale on Tuesday evening. Callahan told us the sale brought in $1,550,000.
“That income stream is important to those producers who consign to that sale," Callahan said.

Governor Kevin Stitt Makes the Rounds at Cattlemen's Congress (again)
|
On Thursday, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt made the rounds at the 2022 Cattlemen's Congress. Afterward, Farm Director KC Sheperd had the opportunity to visit with him to get his thoughts on the 2nd year of Cattlemen's Congress.
"I am just so happy that they are here!" Stitt said. "This is the 2nd year in a row, and this is going to be a tradition now that I hope lasts for 100 years, and we will continue to invest in this facility."
Still said as we move past Cattlemen's Congress this month and look forward to next month's legislative session, he still has goals to make Oklahoma a top 10 state.
"In Oklahoma, we are cutting taxes, we are reducing regulations, we're making it easier for Oklahomans and businesses to thrive here," Stitt said. "So that is my overall goal to make Oklahoma top 10 in everything that we do."

All Natural Brave Experience Beef Snacks Do More Than Provide Sustainable Energy at Cattlemen's Congress
|
As the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress hits its stride, things are heating up in the show pen and among the vendors. The trade show has been compared to a small National Finals Rodeo trade show, with many folks coming straight from there to the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds.
One of the vendors at the event is Weston Clark, president of All Natural Brave Experience. He and his wife, Jodi, produce all-natural, grass-fed Angus beef snacks. But there is more to this product than being a delicious, healthy beef snack.
“We have a TV show that we just moved from the Discovery Channel to RFD-TV and the Cowboy Channel that we call “The Experience with Weston and Jodi,” Clark said. “We surprise America’s heroes with different country stars and celebrities and take them on an amazing (hunting or fishing) experience.”
The Clarks developed their beef snacks to help pay for the trips they send some of America’s bravest service people on.

American Angus Association Off to a Great Start at 2022 Cattlemen's Congress
|
After a successful inaugural Cattlemen’s Congress for Angus breeders a year ago, they are back for the second year of the event at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. Last year, folks came because the show was one of few where they could show cattle during pandemic shutdowns. This year, they are coming back because of Oklahoma hospitality.
Mark McCully, CEO of the American Angus Association, told us Angus exhibitors were thrilled to participate in last year’s event and have been anxious to come back.
“And they sure did - we have had great numbers (of returning exhibitors),” McCully said. “We have already started some sales and things are off to a great start!”
This year, Angus exhibitors once again have multiple venues to participate in. “We tried to provide some different marketing venues, whether it is in the Pen and Carload Show or the Open Show,” McCully said. “We got exhibitors from around the country that have brought bulls and females in.”
According to McCully, the National Angus Bull Sale has grown in popularity this year.
“It has become super competitive for breeders,” McCully said. “Bringing top-end genetics - different programs, different breeding philosophies - cattle are not all bred the same, but that is what a national sale should be.”

OSU's Kim Anderson Says Holiday-Season Wheat Volatility Was Expected
|
This week on SUNUP, Oklahoma State University Grain Marketing Specialist Kim Anderson talks about the state of the grain markets after the holiday season. As predicted, there was volatility in the wheat markets.
On Thanksgiving, wheat prices were around $8.45, then fell to $7.50 a week later, rose back up to $8.30, fell again to $7.60 and so on, according to Anderson.
“(It was) back up to $7.75 and then it has been falling off (since) this weekend,” Anderson said.
Over the last 40 or so days, wheat moved 95 cents, Anderson said. Corn prices started the holiday season at $5.65, got as high as $6 and have since fallen, he added. Soybean prices moved similarly, starting at $12.10, falling to $11.60 and rising to $13.20 at Christmas.
“With wheat, we definitely have volatility,” Anderson said. “With corn, (there is) some uptrend there with a little bit of volatility, but I think (for) soybeans, we are going to say we established an uptrend there.”

Changes to Clean Water Rule Will Hurt Family Farms
|
Member farmers from the American Farm Bureau Federation participated in a roundtable on Thursday, Jan. 6, about the impact of the proposal to repeal and replace the Navigable Waters Protection Rule (NWPR). The event was hosted by the Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy. Arizona Farm Bureau President Stefanie Smallhouse and Colorado Farm Bureau Vice President James Henderson will join several other farmers attending the roundtable to explain why this rule is so consequential for agriculture.
The Biden administration recently proposed a “step 1” Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Rule. Despite claims to the opposite from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Army Corps of Engineers, a new WOTUS rule will have a large impact on small businesses and family farms. The significant nexus test, particularly, will greatly expand federal jurisdiction onto private lands and make it difficult for farmers and ranchers to decipher where their property is impacted.
“Farmers are dedicated to protecting the resources they’re entrusted with while raising the food our country relies on,” AFBF President Zippy Duvall said. “We support responsible rules that protect the environment, but we shouldn’t need a team of lawyers to interpret those rules just to farm our land. The NWPR brought clarity to water regulations, yet farmers and ranchers are again caught in the middle of changing regulations. We urge EPA to return to commonsense protections for the nation’s waterways. Our goal is simple - clean water and clear rules.”
AFBF applauds SBA for scheduling roundtables to hear from families who will be directly affected by a change in water regulations.
