Angus Breeder Barry Pollard Believes Producer Education is Important
|
The folks who serve on the boards of agricultural associations are producers themselves. It is a full-time job to be a producer, so deciding to give back in that big way is no small decision. Barry Pollard, treasurer for the American Angus Association, said he wanted to give back to an organization that has been good to him.
“I also like to learn, and I like to teach,” Pollard said. “So, being on the board of the American Angus Association gives me an opportunity to be more involved.”
Producer education is a large part of what the association does. At this year’s Cattlemen’s Congress, the association’s Angus University hosted a producer education event: Bull Buying Strategies. The event consisted of three, 20-minute sessions that covered some key aspects of what can be a daunting endeavor.
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) have changed the cattle industry since their inception in the 1970s. Today, EPDs allow producers to compare an individual animal’s genetic makeup to the rest of the breed. The tool allows producers to calculate an individual’s genetic value to their operation.

Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell Says Cattlemen's Congress is Great for Oklahoma Tourism
|
Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell toured Cattlemen’s Congress on Friday. He told the Oklahoma Farm Report’s KC Sheperd that he is more impressed with this year’s show than he was last year, and last year, he was very impressed.
“I think we are upping our game each year we have Cattlemen’s Congress,” Pinnell said. “I hope this is something we have here for years and years and decades and decades.”
As the 17th Lieutenant Governor of the State of Oklahoma, Pinnell has many hats including Secretary of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage on Governor Kevin Stitt’s cabinet. In that role, he oversees the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation.
“This is our biggest agritourism event of the year - huge economic impact for Oklahoma City and great branding for the state,” Pinnell said. “The amount of people that come from other states to Oklahoma City for these sales is a really big deal.”

Making America Great Again, One Bale at a Time at Cattlemen's Congress
|
If you are in the cattle business, there is a good chance you are also in the hay business. For the double dippers at this year’s Cattlemen’s Congress, Delvin Drinkall and the American Family Netwrap booth are stationed in the Super Barn, ready to send you home with a roll of red, white and blue netwrap!
“It is Americana,” Drinkall said. “I tell everybody - and I totally believe it - I am selling god and America more than netwrap.”
Drinkall’s slogan is ‘Help Make American Great Again, One Bale at a Time.’ He said every time he sees red, white and blue netwrap in a field, he feels like the nation is getting a little closer to greatness. His clientele is, “farmers, friends and neighbors.”
You can get a roll of American flag netwrap by visiting Drinkall’s booth; American Family Netwrap in the Super Barn at the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress.

BQA Seminar at Cattlemen's Congress Taught the Importance of Cattle Handling Skills
|
At this year’s Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Okla. a unique seminar was offered to exhibitors and producers that featured national beef industry and breed leaders with Beef Quality Assurance. The seminar also allowed folks to earn their BQA certification.
Stephen Boyles, a beef cattle extension special for The Ohio State University, was one of the speakers helping with producer certification at the event. He is also the 2021 BQA Educator of the Year. Ron Hays, senior reporter for the Oklahoma Farm Report, caught up with Boyles after his presentation, which focused on cattle handling best practices.
“People understand the human side,” Boyles said. “From the animal side, for their safety from an animal welfare side and an economic standpoint, bruising causes the beef industry millions of dollars every year.”
Boyles points out the fact that cattle are trainable, just like a horse or a dog. At the same time, handling cattle gently and humanely go far with consumers, according to Boyles. A great rule to remember is to always try to get cattle to walk somewhere instead of run, he added. The proof is in the blood chemistry, according to Boyles.

Sorghum Crop Insurance Price Election Boosted to Reflect Current Pricing
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Risk Management Agency (RMA) has set the sorghum crop insurance price election for reinsurance year 2022 at 99.6% of the price of corn, compared to 96% for 2021. This price election means farmers will have the opportunity to insure grain sorghum at a price almost identical to that of corn.
“This price election gives sorghum producers their largest amount of price protection relative to corn in history under the federal crop insurance program,” National Sorghum Producers CEO Tim Lust said. “We are pleased that farmers will have the protection they need to meet the demand currently driving historically strong prices in the marketplace.”
The sorghum crop insurance price election formula is based on a 10-year rolling average of actual sorghum bids at elevators across the U.S. NSP worked closely with RMA after a 2008 Farm Bill directive to change this formula to be more reflective of sorghum pricing, and since implementation, the change has added $89 million in value to sorghum farmers through increased crop insurance coverage.
