NCBA's Tanner Beymer Explains Price Discovery Discussions at Cattle Industry Convention
|
For the last year, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s 75% Plan monitored producer and packer participation, specifically percentages of cattle purchased through negotiated cash trade. When the packer participation silo failed to meet minimum negotiated-cash-trade requirements in the third quarter, a trigger was tripped, causing a discussion to be held at the 2022 Cattle Industry Convention and the NCBA Tradeshow.
“We tripped two triggers, which required us to have this dialogue, but we also saw remarkable improvement in negotiated trade volumes all across the country, but particularly in the Southern Plains,” Tanner Beymer, director of government affairs and market regulatory policy at the NCBA, said. “I think that is a testament to the fact that as an industry if we decide that we want to do something for the betterment of that industry, we can get it done on our own.”
We spoke with Beymer about how the meeting went, what we know after having the Plan in place for a year and what that means going forward. Beymer said the meeting was a great opportunity to hear from producers from all parts of the country while discussing negotiated cash trade and a handful of other, related market factors.
“(The NCBA) is going to continue to oppose cash-market mandates or any other legislative solution that will restrict a cattle producers’ right to market their cattle in the way that works best for their individual business models,” Beymer said.

CattleFax CEO Randy Blach Foresees Rising Cattle Prices, Rising Input Costs in 2022
|
Now that we have settled into 2022 and reviewed the trials and tribulations of the previous year, the future looks much brighter for the U.S. beef cattle industry than it did at this time last year. We spoke with CattleFax CEO Randy Blach on the recovery of the cattle markets.
“We have worked through the last 24 months with this elevated front-end supply, which has taken all this time to get through,” Blach said. “Leverage is about front-end supply. Now that front-end supply is back to pre-Covid levels, which is why we have seen these markets have a little more push to them.”
Blach predicts slaughter cattle prices will move between $135 and $150 in the first half of the year and then jump to the mid-$150 range in the fall.
With higher input costs and drought making it more expensive to raise beef cattle, Blach hopes higher cattle prices this year will fend off the threat of a shrinking cowherd, like what happened in 2013 and 2014.

OSU's Deb VanOverbeke Honored as BQA Educator of the Year
|
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, a contractor to the Beef Checkoff, has announced the winners of the 2022 Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Awards, sponsored by Cargill. One of the honorees is Dr. Deb VanOverbeke, assistant dean for academic programs at Oklahoma State University’s Ferguson College of Agriculture. She is the 2022 BQA Educator Award recipient.
Originating from a small family feedlot and diversified crop operation, Dr. VanOverbeke has always had a passion and dedication to the cattle industry. She has taken an active part in the BQA program for more than 20 years, serving as the first Nebraska BQA state coordinator. Dr. VanOverbeke then acquired two graduate degrees from Colorado State University, where a majority of her research focused on beef quality and live cattle production practices and interventions. Throughout her career, Dr. VanOverbeke has remained dedicated to the BQA mission of ensuring consumers have quality, safe and wholesome beef, and beef products.
The National BQA Awards annually recognize outstanding beef and dairy producers, marketers, and educators. Winners not only demonstrate high-quality animal care and handling principles as part of their day-to-day operations but express a strong desire to continually improve their operations through BQA. As good stewards of the cattle industry, a common trait among nominees is encouraging others to implement the producer education program.

Oklahoma's Ruth Coffey Named American National CattleWomen (ANCW) Vice President
|
Past Oklahoma CattleWoman President Ruth Coffey has been named the American National CattleWomen (ANCW) Vice President. Coffey, of Springer, Okla., was named to the position at the ANCW Convention in Houston, Feb. 1, 2022. Over the next three years, Coffey will support the initiatives of the ANCW along with fellow officers President Reba Mazak of Florida, and President-Elect Pamela Griffin of Arizona.
Coffey, along with husband, Chuck, and their children run the Double C Cattle Company in south central Oklahoma, a fifth-generation cow calf operation. The Coffeys were recipients of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Environmental Stewardship Award Program (ESAP) in 2020. ESAP strives to recognize “outstanding stewardship practices and conservation achievements of U.S. cattle producers”. Both Ruth and Chuck have been active in the cattle industry for many years.
Prior to this position, Coffey served in the role of ANCW Region IV Director from 2021 to now. She was also named the ANCW Promoter of the Year in 2020, Oklahoma CattleWoman of the Year in 2019 and served as the OCW President from 2017-2019.
While Covering Cattlecon2022 Senior Farm Director Ron Hays caught up with Coffey and she said she decided to get involved because of the fantastic women, "These ladies have a real heart for the beef industry and what we try to do with our animals as we raise them, and these ladies are just trying to be a part of this whole picture at the livestock industry and each aspect of it."

New Legislation Aims to Allow Producers the 'Right to Repair' Their Own equipment
|
As a part of his continued effort to break up consolidation in the agriculture industry, U.S. Senator Jon Tester introduced his Agriculture Right to Repair Act, which will finally guarantee farmers the right to repair their own equipment and end current restrictions on the repair market.
“I’ve been a farmer my whole life, and I’ve seen the unfair practices of equipment manufacturers make it harder and harder for folks to work on their tractors themselves-forcing them to go to an authorized mechanic and pay an arm and a leg for necessary repairs,” Tester said . “Manufacturers have prevented producers from fixing their own machines in order to bolster corporate profits, and they’ve done it at the expense of family farmers and ranchers, who work hard every day to harvest the food that feeds families across the country. Farmers operate in tight windows and on tight margins, and they simply can’t afford to waste time or money bringing their equipment to dealer authorized mechanics in the middle of a season. They need to be able to repair their own equipment, and this legislation will secure them that right.”
With advanced technology now being incorporated into production agriculture, it has become more and more difficult for farmers and ranchers to fix their own equipment, hurting the bottom lines of both producers and local non dealer-certified repair shops. Tester’s legislation will combat the issue of right to repair by requiring original equipment manufacturers to make it easier for farmers to make these repairs and continue doing business in rural America.

Register for Free USDA Webinars on Tax Information on Livestock Sales and Disaster Losses
|
Tax season is just around the corner and there are a variety of important considerations for farmers and livestock producers. USDA has partnered with agriculture tax experts around the country to connect producers to important tax information related to their operations. In February USDA is hosting two informational webinars on income tax treatment of livestock sales and disaster losses. Join us on Feb. 7 and 8 for presentations featuring JC Hobbs of Oklahoma State University to learn about the special tax rules that may apply to your operation.
3:00 p.m. EST Monday, February 7, 2022
Income Tax Treatment of Weather-Related Sales of Livestock
Breeding, dairy, or livestock (excluding poultry) sold due to drought, flood, or other weather-related condition are potentially eligible for special tax treatment, as this sale is considered an involuntary conversion. This presentation will cover the application of these tax rules which allows for the postponement of gain recognition when replacement animals are purchased.
The gain from the sale of any livestock, including poultry, in excess of the normal number of animals sold annually due to drought, flood, or other weather-related condition may allow the reporting of gain to be postponed until the following year. Special tax rules apply, allowing the postponement to occur. This presentation will cover the rules and procedures that must be followed to postpone the reporting of gain.
3:00 p.m. EST Tuesday, February 8, 2022
Income Tax Rules that Apply to Disaster Losses
The tax treatment for losses of property due to disasters varies depending upon whether the item was personal, business or investment property. In addition, consideration is given to the amount of the loss impacted by insurance proceeds, the tax basis of the property at the time of the loss, or disaster payments received. This presentation will cover the tax treatment that applies to losses of property resulting from a disaster.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt to Deliver His State of the State Midday Today
|
The 2022 Oklahoma State Legislative Session is set to begin this week- and Oklahoma's 28th Governor, Kevin Stitt, will deliver his State of the State Address midday today to a joint session of the Oklahoma Legislature.
This will be his final State of the State in his first term as Governor- he is planning to run for a second term later here in 2022.
Based on his comments to the Oklahoma FFA I Believe Gala on Saturday- Expect the Governor to touch on multiple issues and topics of interest to agriculture- including a bit of bragging about the success of Cattlemen's Congress and perhaps his story about grilling beef under the PETA billboard last year after being called a Meathead for declaring a Meat All Week in response the the Meatless holiday declared by the Governor of Colorado.

Oklahoma National Stockyards had just 1,650 head on the yards early Sunday evening- and Kelli Payne, President of ONSY expects to start with 2.300 head on this Monday morning- with the sale starting at 9 AM today with a 15 draft turn and a main.
Numbers are well under recent sales because of the snow storm that has made movement difficult since the middle of last week.
Compared to January 24th- last week's sale had Feeder steers unevenly steady. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Steer calves unevenly steady. Heifer calves 2.00 - 4.00 higher. Demand moderate for all classes. Midweek winter storm is expected to bring ice and snow to much of the area and this is discouraging buyers.
