OSU's Amy Hagerman Offers Guidance Ahead of Risk Mitigation Resource Deadlines
|
Over the next several weeks- there are multiple deadlines for the many different government programs that farmers and ranchers are involved in- from Crop insurance to the Federal Farm Safety Net. Oklahoma Farm Report's KC Sheperd talked this past week with Dr. Amy Hagerman, extension specialist for agriculture and food policy at Oklahoma State University, about the deadlines and decisions to be made.
“February and March are pretty critical times for some of the different programs, and even some of the different crop reports that need to go in,” Hagerman said. “If you want to know exactly what your deadlines are, you need to contact your local (Farm Service Agency) office and your local crop insurance agent.”
Crop insurance enrollment and reporting deadlines vary from crop to crop, Hagerman said.
“March 15 tends to be a date when a lot of things come up,” Hagerman said. “The first is the (Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage) election for producers who have base acres.”
Hagerman said this year is shaping up to be an interesting one considering ARC and PLC elections. As the election deadline nears, producers have higher input costs and drought conditions to take into consideration.
“I would not be surprised if we have a lot of people who wait until the March 15 deadline before making their final election enrollment decisions,” Hagerman said.

OSU Wheat Breeder Brett Carver Says CONVOY Varieties Will Help Wheat Producers Make Superior Returns
|
The 17th Annual Meeting of Oklahoma Genetics was held virtually this past Friday- and featured updates from several members of the Oklahoma State University's Wheat Improvement Team- including team leader Dr. Brett Carver, Regents Professor and holder of the wheat genetics chair at Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Carver updated participants about their work in bringing Coaxium wheat varieties to wheat producers from the OSU wheat variety pipeline- as well as what's ahead for Clearfield wheat varieties from OSU.
The third "C" that Carver talked about at length on Friday was CONVOY wheat. Dr. Carver told the audience that this concept is finally on our doorstep- and will be an opportunity to offer a value added income for wheat producers willing to pursue niche markets for high quality wheat with specific quality traits.
CONVOY is an acronym for Contracted Varieties Other Than for Yield. Dr. Carver told the virtual gathering that he is working now and has some experimentals that are Hard Red Spring like HRW wheats and Hard Red Winter like SRW wheats. On the horizon- Dr. Carver sees what he calls "healthplus wheat" which might provide a high quality antioxident source for consumers and might also include an enhanced fiber, as well.

Oklahoma Ag Secretary Blayne Arthur to EPA- Enlist Herbicide Registration Problematic in Much of Oklahoma
|
Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur has sent a letter to the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Michael Regan, about what she sees as inequitable treatment of many farmers in Oklahoma in regards to the use of Enlist One and Enlist Duo.
Secretary Arthur says that while she is pleased that the EPA has issued seven year registrations for the two products- the "label restrictions and limitations make practical use of these products impossible for the cotton, soybean and corn producers in over half of Oklahoma's 77 counties."
The new rules issued by EPA take the use of Enlist herbicides off the table for approximately 70% of Oklahoma soybean acres. Secretary Arthur writes that "this is deeply concerning, as it takes a crucial tool away from so many producers and comes at a time when many have already made purchases of products they can no longer utilize."

Terry Detrick and Congressman Frank Lucas Honored at Annual AFR Banquet
|
The 2022 AFR Convention Banquet heard from Oklahoma's Third District Congressman Frank Lucas- and the organization took time to honor the former Chairman of the House Ag Committee for his outstanding service to Oklahoma Agriculture.
Also that evening- former President of the AFR, Terry Detrick, was honored with their Meritorious Service Award for 2022. Detrick has served farmers and ranchers at the local, state and national levels- including state and and national President of the Oklahoma and National Wheat Growers- a member of the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion Board in addition to multiple terms as President of the AFR/OFU.
(Our thanks to Rodd Moesel of OkFB for sharing these pics on Facebook- I had family obligations on Saturday evening and sorry I was not there to celebrate with both Terry and the Congressman)

USMEF’s Dan Halstrom Says U.S. Beef Exports Have More Room to Grow in 2022
|
When it comes to U.S. beef exports, 2021 was not only a good year but the best year on record in terms of volume and value. 1.44 million metric tons brought in $10.58 billion – more than $2 billion more than in 2018, the previous record year.
Dan Halstrom, president and CEO of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, says there is still some upside to beef export growth. “At this point, we are forecasting increased demand, albeit it at a slower rate,” Halstrom said. “Our forecast is about 5% growth, (meaning) another new record, in 2022.”
The basis for more growth is in diverse, solid demand for U.S. beef, especially in the Asian markets. An upside that simply was not in play in 2021 is the foodservice industry.
“Most of these records in Asia (were reached) without the full support of food service,” Halstrom said. “We still have lockdowns and restrictions around food service today in Korea, Japan and Taiwan.”
There are headwinds that could keep beef exports from hitting another record in 2022- lingering supply chain challenges and high beef prices remain.

AFR President Scott Blubaugh Details Policy Action at AFR's 117th Convention
|
American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) held its 117th annual state convention at the Embassy Suites & Conference Center over this past weekend. This year's convention theme was "One AFR."
Convention attendees were on hand to discuss legislative issues, such as industry consolidation and lack of competition in agriculture as well as the hottest topic in rural Oklahoma right now- medical marijuana grow houses. .
Oklahoma Farm Report's KC Sheperd was on hand covering the meeting and sat down with AFR President Scott Blubaugh to talk about what policy issues came up from Friday's Session. Blubaugh said the policy committee spent about six days vetting existing policy and learning about the current issues that are the most important to members. Blubaugh said Medical Marijuana is something that continues to be brought up, "Not the legal grows, but all the illegal grows out there. And what a complicated issue that is. But our policy committee did take action. We are supporting some legislation running at the State capital this year. We're hoping to get some reforms and some regulation there."

New Report Highlights Opportunities for Financial Innovations to Accelerate Sustainable Agriculture
|
A new report from Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture highlights the need for innovative financial mechanisms and incentive strategies to help farmers and ranchers build on their already-impressive sustainability gains. The report, Financial Innovations to Accelerate Sustainable Agriculture: Blueprints for the Value Chain, provides 12 tangible blueprints and case studies for value chain actors to follow as they seek to catalyze lasting and systemic change in U.S. agriculture.
Authored by members of the Field to Market Innovative Finance Workgroup, the report shares concrete strategies to help farmers balance the risks and rewards of adopting or expanding sustainable agriculture practices. Among other things, the report addresses overcoming key barriers to farmer adoption of conservation practices, moving beyond early adopters and tackling the agronomic and financial risk farmers face in transitioning to the practices necessary for a more resilient food and agriculture system.
“As supply chain sustainability efforts to improve environmental outcomes through the supply chain continue to evolve, there is increasing attention on the economic barriers to the implementation of sustainable agriculture at scale,” said Scott Herndon, president of Field to Market. “The work of Field to Market’s Innovative Finance Workgroup continues to equip our members across the value chain with innovative and effective strategies to spur greater investment, collaboration and action to drive a more resilient agricultural system.”

Oklahoma National Stockyards had just under 12,000 head on Sunday evening- Kelli Payne tells us that they expect to start the sale this morning with 13,000 plus- and a total total of 14,000 to sell on this February 14th- she says the sale will begin today at 6:30 AM.
Compared to the sale of January 31st- Receipts on 2/07 were limited due to winter storm late last week. Much of the state seeing anywhere from 3-7 inches of snow. Much of this snow drifted due to high winds and unfortunately most of the snow landed in sidebars and ditches. Demand extremely good for the light run. Feeder steers and heifers 2.00-6.00 higher, instance 8.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves 5.00-10.00 higher.
