Rep. Frank Lucas Says Pres. Biden Needs to Light a Fire Under DOJ on Packer Investigation
|
The former Chairman of the House Ag Committee and rancher from Roger Mills County, Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas, says that he agrees with President Joe Biden regarding his comments during the State of the Union regarding meat packer concentration- the President saying there is a problem and it needs to be addressed.
Congressman Lucas told me that he agrees with the President- but that the President needs to back up his words with actions. He believes that the President needs to call his Attorney General to the White House and instruct him to start pushing the Department of Justice lawyers who have been working for over two years on an investigation into the four major meat packers and whether any collusion may have happened among two or more of the major players in the meat processing business. Lucas says that he understands that this is a criminal investigation- "this is done like you are investigating the mafia- like you are investing organized crime- they don't give us progress reports- they don't discuss what they are doing- we just know they are doing it."

Drought Continues Across the State With Slight Chances of Rain in the Forecast
|
Virtually the entire state of Oklahoma remains in moderate drought or worse- according to the latest Drought Monitor released on Thursday morning.
Over 92% is abnormally dry or worse- down from 93% last week- while 86.65% of Oklahoma is in moderate drought or worse- the exact same number as a week ago. A year ago- we were just under five percent in this rating.
Right at three fourths of Oklahoma is in severe drought or worse, while just over half- 52% of the state is now in exceptional drought or worse. Compare that to less than one percent of the state in this category this time one year ago.
Click on the map above to see more details of the drought found in Oklahoma this week- and click on the Blue Button below for more details about national drought conditions and what the six to ten day forecast is looking like.

OSU's Kim Anderson Says IF the Black Sea Stays Shut Down- $12 Wheat Might Be a LOW Price
|
This week on Sunup, Crop Marketing specialist, Dr. Kim Anderson is talking about the affects of the Russia/Ukraine Tension and how that affects the grain markets. "The big impact has been on Wheat prices. Wheat stocks were already tight, stocks were going down, and because of COVID we came into this with some countries hoarding stocks and so we had a shortage of wheat already.
"And then on February 20, and 21 in Oklahoma, our price was right at $8 per bushel, this morning It was at $10.25. That's a $2.40 price increase for the price of wheat in Oklahoma."
How high is high? Dr. Anderson says we are dealing with so much unknown right now with a huge part of the global wheat capacity in turmoil- Russia and Ukraine account for just over 50% of those supplies.
For Oklahoma wheat farmers- the problem is that we are like the kid staring into the front window of the candy store- with no allowance. "85 to 90% of our 2021 wheat has been sold so we can't sell last year's crop and we've got the yield risk because of the drought so we don't know how much we can sell of the new crop at these high prices...and we don't know how high these prices are gonna go- if the Black Sea stays shut down, twelve dollars may be a low price."
Editor's Note- cash wheat prices in Oklahoma are already getting close to those levels- as of Thursday PM- the Gulf Bid was $12.60- up 75 cents on the day with the bulk of Cash Grain bids from $10.85 to $11.03 and Hooker with some wheat still being fed has a cash bid of $11.48.
You can hear all of Dr. Anderson's comments ahead of the weekend by clicking on the Blue Button below. Spoiler alert- if you raise spring crops- he talks about fertilizer and the war's impacts for crops we will soon be planting- and that impact is considerable.
You can see Dr. Anderson's segment with Lyndall Stout this weekend on OETA as a part of SUNUP as produced by the Ag Communications team at OSU- and our story linked below has the full lineup for this week's program- check it out!

U.S. Wheat: Still The World’s Most Reliable Choice
|
From US Wheat Associates- here's some facts and figures about how US wheat compares to other major exporters when it comes to reliability.
"The world’s wheat buyers have heard the claim that dependable U.S. farmers produce “the world’s most reliable choice.” U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) and the farmers we represent believe in that claim because so many customers rely on several classes of U.S. wheat to meet their specific end-use and quality needs and because importing U.S. wheat carries less risk.
"The situation the world’s wheat buyers see today is uncertain. The invasion of Ukraine has disrupted already stressed exportable supplies. Market volatility is the result.
"Fortunately, overseas customers know they can depend on the integrity of the U.S. supply chain, the quality of U.S. wheat and our unmatched reliability as a supplier. Here is why U.S. wheat remains the world’s most reliable choice."

Leaders in Oklahoma Conservation Receive Awards at the OACD’s 84th Annual State Meeting
|
Consider them investors. They have invested time, planning and resources into the conservation of Oklahoma’s soil and water. However, they are investing for the good of the earth rather than themselves.
Several of these conservation investors were recognized with awards at the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts (OACD) 84th Annual Meeting, held Feb. 27-28 and March 1 at the Edmond Conference Center.
“Oklahoma is home to the best land stewards and advocates for conservation in the country,” said Sarah Blaney, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts. “It was wonderful to be able to honor several of them at our 84th annual meeting.”
A great example of this came as State Representative Carl Newton of District 58 in northwestern Oklahoma and Dr. Katie Blunk(Pictured above), a rancher at Freedom, Okla., a Director of the Woods County Conservation District and the OACD Area I Director, presented each other with major citations/awards.
Dr. Blunk presented the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts Legislator of the Year Award to Rep. Dr. Carl Newton.
Minutes later, Newton, along with Senator Casey Murdock, District, 27, presented a Legislative Citation to Dr. Katie Blunk and the Lazy KT Ranch, recently named as the Oklahoma recipient of the very prestigious Leopold Conservation Award.

Dairy Industry Exec Barbara O'Brien Shares 'Bold Moves' With Checkoff Leaders
|
Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) CEO Barbara O’Brien provided an overview of four “bold moves” the checkoff has made with farmer and importer directors representing DMI, United Dairy Industry Association and National Dairy Promotion and Research Board at their recent meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
O’Brien, who assumed the CEO position in October, spent the last four months gathering input from hundreds of farmers and other stakeholders about the checkoff’s vision and strategy. She said this feedback helped direct these four moves.
“We’re looking through the windshield, not the rearview mirror,” O’Brien said. “I used the input as inspiration and guidance in crafting our vision and priorities. With farmer leadership and strong support, I feel empowered to define what’s next for checkoff and what checkoff needs to be over the next 10 years.”
