The Woodland FFA Chapter took home the Grand Championship at the 3rd Annual Ag Mechanics show at the Oklahoma Youth Expo.
The 4 person team had big dreams this year while building their One of a kind Roll-off Trailer hay bed. The Group consists of Josie Doshier, Danner Lessert, Trista Kelly and Landee Doshier and together they came up with the idea to build a Hay bed.

Cattlemen's Congress Leadership Planning to Build on Success of 2022 in January 2023 With Their Third Congress
|
Plans are already underway for the third Cattlemen's Congress as cattle industry leaders in Oklahoma hope to build on the success of the first two years. I sat down a few weeks after the 2022 show and talked with the Chairman of the Cattlemen's Congress Board, Jarold Calahan with Express Ranches.
Year two saw the amount of sales hosted and the revenue generated climbed to new heights this year. 13 sales were hosted at the OKC Fairgrounds, and 9 were held off-site during the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress, resulting in 22 total sales generating more than $10 million during the 16 day show period.
The 2022 show had over 9,000 head of cattle entered with more breeds represented than year one, with the amount of cattle shown this year increasing by more than 500 head when compared to 2021.
Callahan says “These numbers show that this really is the meeting place for cattlemen and women across the world. The positive impact proves to be undeniable, and we are humbled to host so many here in the heart of cattle country.”

Allendale's Rich Nelson says March WASDE Neutral for Corn and soybeans, Slightly bearish for Wheat
|
In its March global and domestic supply and demand report, USDA factored in the war in Ukraine by slashing exports from the country, even as Ukraine implemented its own ban on exports on Wednesday.
Just hours before USDA released its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, Ukraine announced an export ban on wheat, corn, sunflower oil, oats, rye, barley, sugar and cattle.
In a note, USDA stated "Russia's recent military action in Ukraine significantly increased the uncertainty of agricultural supply and demand conditions in the region and globally. The March WASDE represents an initial assessment of the short-term impacts as a result of this action."
KC Sheperd spoke with Allendale's Rich Nelson about the latest Results, and Nelson said we may see further declines for wheat exports in future months, " In addition, we may see the US new crop, which starts on June 1, to pick up a little better business. Another factor, the trade has clear concerns about the US hard red production given dry conditions forecast for April in the Plains"

AFBF Executive Vice President Dale Moore Announces Retirement
|
American Farm Bureau Federation Executive Vice President Dale Moore announced Wednesday his plans to retire in 2022 after four decades as an agricultural leader in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. AFBF President Zippy Duvall commented on the announcement.
“Dale has been a tireless advocate on behalf of farmers and ranchers throughout his career and has certainly contributed to American Farm Bureau’s strength over the past four years. He has become a trusted advisor to me and to many state Farm Bureau presidents and staff.
“More broadly, Dale has dedicated more than 40 years of his professional life to being a champion for agriculture through his work on Capitol Hill, at USDA and in the private sector.

Upgrade Your Cattle's Reputation with Preconditioning
|
From this week's Cow Calf Corner- Dr. Paul Beck explains about how to Upgrade Your Cattle’s Reputation with Preconditioning.
"Our customers (stocker operators and feedlots) want matched sets of calves that are weaned, castrated, dehorned, familiar with water and feed sources and immunocompetent. What is “immunocompetent”? That is simply a fancy way of saying that the calves can respond appropriately to stressors and disease challenges, and if they get sick, their immune system will be able work with the antibiotics we provide to answer the challenge.
"Calves need to have a sound, balanced nutritional program and be free from internal parasites in order to have an immune system fit enough to withstand the marketing and transportation channels of our beef production system.
"Bob Levalley, Beef Quality Assurance Coordinator for the Oklahoma Beef Council states “From a Beef Quality Assurance perspective, following approved BQA production practices associated with preconditioning, should result in cattle with few carcass defects. This should lead to higher quality, higher value cattle.”
"Research at Oklahoma State University in the late 90’s showed that finished steers treated for bovine respiratory disease gained less and had lighter carcasses, costing the feedlot operator $20/head for steers treated only once to $75/head for steers that were treated multiple times, the reduction in returns is related to reduced performance and carcass quality (79%) and only 21% of the reduction in profit was related to medicine costs. Other research conducted at Oklahoma State University showed that gains, feed efficiency, ribeye area, and marbling decreased significantly as the number of treatments for BRD increased.

Growing Matters Kicks Off Annual BeSure! Campaign to Help Care for Pollinators During Planting Season
|
The agriculture industry collaboration led by Growing Matters today launched its fourth annual BeSure! stewardship awareness campaign to promote best management practices when using neonicotinoid products on farms and urban landscapes.
The BeSure! campaign uses a wide range of media channels including print, radio, digital and social media to remind farmers, crop protection applicators, urban landscape applicators, agricultural supply retailers and others to ensure label directions and responsible stewardship measures are followed for neonicotinoid products, minimizing any potential impact on pollinators and other wildlife.
Over the last three years, the BeSure! campaign is estimated to have reached millions of people providing them with access to a wide range of informational resources to help them use seed treatments responsibly and avoid exposure to pollinators and wildlife.
"As we enter the fourth year of the BeSure! campaign, we know we have been able to reach a wide range of key stakeholders – from farmers to landscapers – to encourage them to follow easy to understand actions when using neonicotinoid products, such as applying them at times that pollinators are not active," said Tom Smith, executive director, National Pesticide Safety Education Center (NPSEC), one of the Growing Matters coalition partners.
In addition to NPSEC, the campaign has been endorsed by the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), National Corn Growers Association, CropLife America, the Agricultural Retailers Association and the American Soybean Association, among others.

In It's Third Year- OYE's Ag Mechanics Contest Continues Strong Growth
|
The Ag Mechanics Show at the 2022 Oklahoma Youth Expo is its third year of the show being held- and the Superintendent for all three years, Jerry Renshaw, is happy that the show continues to grow in both numbers and quality of projects competing for honors in six categories.
I spent a few minutes with Jerry as teams of judges crosscrossed the Oklahoma Building talking with the owners of the 122 projects that came to Oklahoma City to be a part of the 2022 OYE.
Renshaw says "I'm just so excited...we've got 122 projects here representative of everything from the small decorative all the way up to giant functional double deck hay trailers with an optional skid unit on there to cattle feeders to working cattle chutes- the array is amazing."
The show has been in the same building all three years at the OKC Fairgrounds- and in 2020- about half of the square footage was used- in 2021 that grew to about two thirds of the building being full- and here in 2022- the building is, for all practical purposes, a full house.
Renshaw believes that the show may need a move to another building on the grounds as early as 2023 saying "we are at 122 (projects) this year- next year- I think we will break the 200 mark and it could grow twenty percent yearly for the next several years after that."
