OSU's Derrell Peel Weighs in on Big Placements in March USDA Cattle on Feed Report
|
As is often the case, placements were the story of the latest USDA monthly Cattle on Feed Report that came out on Friday afternoon, March 25, 2022. Placements were up nine percent from a year ago- and at the high end of the pre report guesses. The bigger-than-expected jump in placements seems to be driven by poor pasture conditions due to drought in the Plains. Texas (up 40,000 head), Kansas (up 50,000 head), Nebraska (up 55,000 head) and Colorado (up 10,000 head) accounted for nearly the entire 157,000-head increase in placements.
After the report was released, I talked with OSU Extension Livestock Market Economist Dr. Derrell Peel about the report and what those numbers may mean to cattle producers near term and further out as well.
Dr. Peel says the size of the placement number was somewhat surprising- "Well yeah, it's been a little surprising that we have been able to hold these feedlot numbers up and we have talked about this before- we know that cattle numbers in general are coming down...but of course you can change that timing for quite a period of time and that's what feedlots have been doing for several months now actually- they have been able to place cattle and pull them ahead if you will, more so in recent months. The bottom line is they have been able to hold these feedlot inventories. I think they have been aided in this case by some drought conditions and dry wheat pasture conditions so cattle moved earlier than otherwise so they are in the feedlots now- but that means they won't be there later."

Pecans First Commodity in the Country to Establish Both a Federal Marketing Order and a Checkoff Body
|
Until this past week- the American Pecan Association had not met in person since August of 2019. But the staff and leadership of the Federal Marketing Order did not let the disruptions caused by the Pandemic slow down their efforts to improve awareness about and demand for a nut that is native to North America- the American Pecan.
Alex Ott is the Executive Director of the American Pecan Council and I sat down as the Council gathered this past week in Dallas. Ott told yours truly that a lot of good things had happened while the Pecan Council sat up the infrastructure for the FMO- now five years old- and awareness of Pecans is one of those good things. "2021- for Pecans- it was a good year. We actually increased consumption of pecans."
The FMO has been approved by growers for another five years- and now pecan growers have decided to take another step and become the very first commodity in the US to have both a Federal Marketing Order and a Checkoff as well.
Why both? The FMO has been remarkably successful for US Pecan growers- but Ott says that producers were frustrated that imported buts- mostly from Mexico- were getting a free ride from the marketing and promotion efforts of the American Pecan Council. The promotion efforts- including the Original Supernut campaign told the story of US Pecans but received no monetary support from imported nuts. So pecan leadership have set up the 22nd Research and Promotion Checkoff Board for US Agriculture- and this new body will operate in addition to the American Pecan Council.

All About Rainwater Harvesting and Fundamentals of Rain Barrels Coming in April
|
Anyone interested in learning about rain barrels in the home landscape can do so at an upcoming Fundamentals for Rain Barrels presentation in April.
“Rainwater harvesting is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly practice for consumers,” said Qing Luo, Oklahoma State University associate professor and OSU Extension landscape architecture specialist. “It’s a great way to conserve water, which can cut down on your utility bill. It also can help reduce the demand on the municipal water supply. In addition, capturing rainwater can help reduce flooding issues and erosion around your home.”
The OSU Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture is partnering with the City of Stillwater Stormwater Program to help the public learn more about why rainwater harvesting as well as rain barrel site selection and installation techniques are important.
The workshop will take place via Zoom from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on April 6. Participants may register online up to one day before the workshop begins. Space is limited to 50 participants. A Zoom link will be sent to participants automatically via email following registration.

USDA Announces More Resources to Increase and Expand Meat and Poultry Processing Capacity
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the launch of the Meat and Poultry Processing Capacity Technical Assistance Program (MPPTA) to provide technical assistance to meat and poultry grant applicants and grant-funded projects. Processors and applicants involved with the Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grant (MPIRG) program and the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) can access this technical assistance. USDA also announced it is now accepting applications for $23.6 million in competitive grant funding available through the MPIRG program.
As part of Biden Administration Action Plan for a Fairer, More Competitive, and More Resilient Meat and Poultry Supply Chain, USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has established cooperative agreements with three non-profit organizations to coordinate and provide technical assistance utilizing a wide range of expertise and outreach strategies. These organizations will also establish a national network of support for meat and poultry grant applicants to navigate the application process, and to assist grant recipients throughout their project.
“This is a true partnership to help meat and poultry processors and grant applicants diversify processing ownership throughout the country,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “Meat and poultry processing is a complex sector that requires significant planning and forethought to manage economic viability concurrently with worker, food, and environmental safety. We are pleased to partner with these initial organizations, given their deep technical expertise and demonstrated service to underserved communities, as part of our support for fairer, more competitive, and resilient meat and poultry supply chains.”

Implants- A Best Management Tool in Your Quest for Sustainability
|
Back at the 2022 Cattle Industry Conference- I was asked to moderate a roundtable on a beef management practice that has been around for years- but still delivers an excellent return on investment- and should be part of a beef cattlemen's plan to be more sustainable in how they produce beef for today's consumer.
The folks at Feedlot Magazine put together the panel of producers and researchers who represented the beef industry very well- from cow calf to feedlot and offered great insights into how this not-so-new technology can help producers be better positioned to meet the demands of a modern, ever-changing landscape.
The panel that I worked with included Dr. Ty Lawrence of West Texas A&M University- he is the Director of the Beef Carcass Research Center at WTAMU; Dr. Trent McEvers of Dean Cluck Feeders in the Texas Panhandle, Dr. Randall Raymond with Simplot Livestock in Idaho and John Hepton, Nutrionist with Performix Nutrition Systems.
Also on the panel was Dr. Wade Nichols, Senior Tech Service Manager with Merck- Dr. Nichols has been working with beef implants for as long as anyone- back to some of the earliest implants that were available for beef cattle producers.
You can watch the video by clicking below- it offers some excellent insights into how implants deliver on a higher yielding carcass in a cost effective way. Learn more about Merck's lineup of implant technology by clicking here.
