Latest Crop Progress Shows Oklahoma Wheat 29% Good to Excellent Up from 22% Last Week
|
U.S. corn planting remained steady in the week ended April 10 at 2%, USDA reported on the weekly Crop Progress report released Monday. This was down from the five-year average of 3% for this time of year. Texas led the way at 63% planted with six other southern states showing some progress
Five percent of U.S. winter wheat was headed, compared to 4% last week, 5% last year and a 6% five-year average. Winter wheat condition improved to 32% good to excellent as of Sunday, April 10, two percentage points higher than last week, but considerably lower than 53% at same time last year.
This is the second lowest such rating of the past two decades, next to a 30% at this time in 2018.
Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas have good to excellent ratings of 34%, 29% and 7%, respectively.
Oklahoma and Texas state reports also provide us a pasture and range condition rating here early in the season- and the Oklahoma rating is up 10 percentage points from a week ago from 32% UP TO 42% this week- while Texas edges up to 7% good to excellent from 6% last week- poor to very poor in Texas is the real number to watch- at 76% poor to very poor this week from 77% last week.

Oklahoma Cattlewomen's Beef Advocacy Junior Contest Winner, Morley Griffith
|
On Friday, April 8, the Oklahoma Cattlewomen’s beef advocacy junior contest took place in El Reno, Okla. In two interviews, contestants from grades 5th-12th were required to explain beef production, present the beef community in a positive manner, know the nutritional benefits of beef, and more.
Morley Griffith of the Dale FFA Chapter is senior champion beef advocate of the contest. During Griffith’s winning interview, she said the has been involved in the cattle industry since the age of four.
Griffith said her involvement started in a show program, but as she has grown older, her dad and family have involved her in their registered commercial cow/calf operation.
“I deem myself the herd manager, where I am in charge of vaccine protocols and making breed decisions for our cow/calf operation,” Griffith said.
Her family’s cow/calf operation, Griffith said, feeds directly back into their show program, where she has been able to see bred and owned cattle in the show ring be successful. It is a really rewarding experience, she added.
Griffith said she serves on the Oklahoma Junior Cattleman’s board and is the president of the Oklahoma Club Calf Association.
“I believe in the beef industry and what it does for youth, so I am definitely proud to be a part of it,” Griffith said.

OkFB Legislative Update: Second Committee Deadline Arrives
|
Both chambers hit the ground running this week as attentions focused back to committee work as the deadline for most bills to receive approval from the committee opposite their chamber of origin is this coming Thursday, April 14.
SB 1624 by Sen. Adam Pugh and Rep. Dell Kerbs sought to transfer the school lunch program from the State Department of Education to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. The goal of the transfer was to house the school lunch program within a department already focused on feeding Oklahomans and to open up new ways for schools to partner with local producers. Following concerns from committee members, the bill failed to receive the necessary votes to proceed to the House floor. The committee now retains ownership of the bill, and it could receive a second hearing next week ahead of the Thursday deadline.
The House Agriculture Committee heard SB 1110 by Sen. David Bullard and Rep. Justin Humphrey which would direct the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry to request a waiver from the United States Department of Agriculture to allow a pilot program for remote meat inspection. If approved, state-inspected meat processors would be allowed to have their meat inspected remotely by a certified inspector utilizing continuous streaming viewing technologies. The pilot program would only be utilized for intrastate meat sales. Following several questions regarding what such a program might mean for food safety, the bill was laid over in hopes of addressing committee members’ concerns. It will be available for consideration again next week.

Extreme Fire Danger in the Mix for Today Across Western Oklahoma
|
Today- there are concerns about wildfire conditions even as much of western Oklahoma could be a considered a tinder box- waiting for a spark to burn very quickly.
According to the latest Fire Danger update from the Oklahoma Forestry Services- April 12th is a worry:
"Tuesday, April 12, will present potential for an ominous situation in Oklahoma – Extreme fire danger west and severe storm potential east. With regard to the fire danger, the conditions will be eerily similar to April 12, 2018 when the Rhea Fire, 34 Complex and Shaw Fire occurred along with several other impactful fires in Oklahoma.
"A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Tuesday across Western Oklahoma, and the fire environment will be supportive of significant fire occurrence (+5,000 Acres) with wildfire outbreak conditions probable. Any fire that starts will prove challenging to suppress and fire occurrence in contiguous rangeland fuels will likely transition to extreme fire behavior soon after ignition.
"Rangeland fuels, especially in northwest Oklahoma and eastern Oklahoma Panhandle will have potential to exhibit head fire rates of spread 3.1-5.1 mph, spotting to 1/4 mile and extreme fireline intensity. Emergency Management and Law Enforcement Agencies should be prepared to facilitate evacuations."

AFR Day at the Capitol Celebrated on Monday
|
Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with Scott Blubaugh, President of AFR, during AFR day at the Oklahoma Capitol to talk about the event and issues that will be discussed throughout the day
“It is AFR day, our annual event out here at the state capitol, when we invite our grassroots membership from all over the state of Oklahoma,” Blubaugh said. “Seventy-seven counties come out here and tell these senators, our state representatives and the governor and his team what issues are important to them in rural Oklahoma and how it affects them on the farm and their rural communities.”
“Citizen lobbying done on our AFR policy that’s created a buyer policy committee and then goes to our convention and is approved by our general membership,” Blubaugh said. “We change that every year; we update it and make it current to the issues that are important to our members.”
