Governor Kevin Stitt Sits On Top of the Red Wave on Election Night in Oklahoma
|
Oklahoma remained solidly red when it came to statewide races and in our US House races on Tuesday- and Oklahoma Farm Bureau's Vice President of Public Policy Steve Thompson tells yours truly that "Oklahoma is very much a red state- I'd put us up against any red state in the country- and most certainly rural Oklahoma has spoke loud and clear with that" and adds that "the Governor did very well- and that was the story of the night- the top of the ticket."
Thompson says one of the factors in supporting the Governor that resonated with Farm Bureau members and others across rural Oklahoma was several of the appointees that have been working for Governor Kevin Stitt- including Oklahoma State Secretary of Ag- Blayne Arthur.
After a hotly contested campaign- Governor Kevin Stitt was reelected- defeating State School Superintendent Joy Hofmeister by a 55% to 42% margin. Tuesday night “Today, dark money lost, and the people of Oklahoma won,” Stitt said in his victory speech.
Other State and Federal winners on Tuesday night:
Senator James Lankford and Senator Elect Markwayne Mullin will be our new Senatorial team
US House winners include Tom Cole, Frank Lucas(see below), Kevin Hern, Stephanie Bice and Josh Brecheen.
Statewide races were won by Lt. Gov Matt Pinnell, Kim David (Corp Commission), Leslie Osborn (Labor), Russ Todd (Treasurer), Gentner Drummond (AG) and Ryan Walters, (State School Superintendent).

Congressman Frank Lucas Wins Reelection- Senior Member of Oklahoma Delegation Expects to Return to House Ag Committee
|
Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas was a part of the Red Wave in Oklahoma- something that other parts of the country did not participate in. Lucas won reelection to his third district seat with 74.45% of the vote on Tuesday- the highest winning percentage of any Oklahoma Congressional candidate. First elected to Congress in 1994- Lucas will enter 2023 as the Senior member of the Oklahoma Congressional delegation.
As of this morning- there is no certainty that the GOP will win control of the House or Senate. Chances are better for the Republicans to be the majority party in the House and if that happens- Oklahoma will be making history with both Congressmen Lucas and Tom Cole poised to become Committee Chairs in 2023. Lucas would become the Chair of the Science and Technology Committee while Cole would become Chair of the powerful Rules Committee.
Just as important for Oklahoma agriculture- being in the majority will help Congressman Lucas exercise his assurance from GOP Leadership from a couple of years ago that he could return to the House Ag Committee- preserving his seniority on the Committee just as serious work gets underway to write the 2023 Farm Bill. Lucas also expects to keep his seat on Financial Services in the coming term.
We were on hand at the Lucas and Cole Watch Party in downtown OKC- and you can hear our conversation with Frank Lucas by clicking on the Blue Button below.

Global Spending Power Playing Large Role in U.S. Beef Exports
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with the president and CEO of the United States Meat Export Federation, Dan Halstrom, talking about the latest on U.S. beef export numbers.
Dan and I are talking at the USMEF's annual Strategic Planning Conference underway this week in Oklahoma City.
“The September (Beef Export) numbers just came out, and we were down a little bit on beef, but still, a 900-million-dollar month, which it wasn’t too long ago, that was a record month,” Halstrom said.
Despite being down a bit, Halstrom said broad-based growth was seen in specific markets.
“We had a really good month in the ASEAN region with the Philippines and Vietnam numbers up pretty big,” Halstrom said. “The Caribbean continues to perform at a record pace.”
Some larger markets, such as Korea, were down slightly, Halstrom said, but still had a very good month. Mexico, he added, was about even with a year ago.
“China continues to be up, off of very big numbers from a year ago,” Halstrom said.
There are still many reasons to be positive, Halstrom said, but some headwinds are starting to catch up, such as global inflation and pricing in general.
“It kind of makes you wonder a little bit about the spending power in some of these countries, but nevertheless, still pretty positive overall,” Halstrom said.

Oklahoma CattleWomen President Cheyenne Sparks Gives Overview of Upcoming Events
|
Farm Director, KC Sheperd, caught up with the president of the Oklahoma CattleWomen’s Association, Cheyenne Sparks, and talked about exciting events coming up for the association.
“First and foremost, we have our Region IV meeting,” Sparks said. “ANCW (American National CattleWomen, Inc.) has regions all across the United States, and Oklahoma is in Region IV with Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. We like to meet up once a year and have a regional meeting where we learn about what is going on in the industry- not just in our region but nationally.”
In the regional meeting, Sparks said attendees will discuss what each individual state is doing to better serve the cattle community.
“That is going to be our homecoming. That is when we get to talk with each other, learn, engage, and share the good news about beef,” Sparks said. “We are looking to have that in Oklahoma this coming year in 2023. I am very excited for us to bring it to our home state and just welcome all of these Cattlewomen from all over.”
The ANCW Region IV meeting will take place on May 5 in Oklahoma City, which will continue into the weekend with an event called the Women in Ranching and Education Development on May 6, and fellowship on May 7.
Women in Ranching and Educational Development, also referred to as WIRED, is for anyone in the beef community looking to become more successful and knowledgeable in their operation.
Whether you are somebody coming up in college and looking to gain knowledge before you start your own operation, whether you are managing and facilitating your operation alongside your partner, or whether you are someone later along in life that is taking on the ranch by yourself for the first time, Sparks said the WIRED program is for everyone.

National Cotton Council’s Don Parker Urges Ag Industry to Connect with EPA to Aid in Pesticide Regulations and Registration
|
At the Oklahoma Ag Expo in Norman on Tuesday, Associate Farm Editor, Reagan Calk, had the chance to visit with the National Cotton Council Vice President for Technical Services, Dr. Don Parker, about how cotton producers are being impacted by the regulatory challenges for pesticide registration and use.
“We are going through some new requirements on the registration process,” Parker said. “There is a lot of focus on how to comply with the Endangered Species Act. A consultation component is required for the registration of pesticide products, and there is a process that has been slow to develop on how we can then accomplish this consultation process and protect the endangered species, but still have access to these crop protection products.”
Early on, Parker said, the attempt was made to simply prohibit the use of certain pesticides in endangered species counties.
“That is not a viable option whenever you just start taking products away from producers just because they live in a (specific) county,” Parker said. “There are many other ways that we can address this.”
The agriculture community, Parker said, is becoming more engaged in finding a solution to addressing the consultation process to enhance endangered species without giving up pesticide products.
In the registration of pesticide products, Parker said without input from the agricultural community, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is left to make assumptions with the information they have.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
KC Sheperd shares the story of Joey Carter, a hard-working farmer who was widely regarded as a model citizen in a rural North Carolina town. Carter is the focus of a movie coming out in October called Hog Farmer- the Trials of Joey Carter.
He was not the type of person who ever expected to find himself caught up in the middle of a federal lawsuit involving some of the nation’s most ruthless trial lawyers and one of the world’s largest food companies.
But that’s exactly what happened when Joey’s family farm became the focal point in a series of nuisance trials that attracted national and international media attention. While his neighbors leveled charges of environmental racism in hopes of winning multi-million-dollar verdicts, Joey was left wondering how this could happen to a man who has always taken pride in playing by the rules.
