U.S. Custom Harvesters Available Near and Far to Aid Farmers with Crop Harvest
|
At the National Association of Farm Broadcasters convention in Kansas City, Farm Director, KC Sheperd, got the chance to visit with the Vice President of U.S. Custom Harvesters, Inc., David Misener. Misener and Sheperd talk about what the U.S. Custom Harvesters have to offer to farmers and the condition of this year’s crops.
“This whole year, Oklahoma was our worst,” Misener said. “We swathed a lot of wheat at the beginning of the year in May, so that way, we got something out of nothing. In Kansas, we did some really good wheat- we did some sorry wheat as well.”
Misener lives in the Elk City area in Oklahoma, but as Vice President of the U.S. Customer Harvester, Inc., Misener has had the opportunity to travel the U.S. and see how crops in different states compare to one another. In Misener’s travels, he said the common trend he saw was many areas that were short on moisture.

Oklahoma Drought Monitor Shows Slight Improvements in Top Three Drought Categories
|
According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, colder temperatures can be expected to come through this Friday and into the weekend; the panhandle may see single digits. The weather around Thanksgiving looks a bit unsettled, with some moisture possible, but not cold enough for snow or ice as of now.
In Oklahoma, exceptional drought has improved from last week and is now at 19.67 percent (last week was at 22.38 percent).
Extreme drought or worse is down just slightly from last week’s 64.54 percent and is now at 64.07 percent.
Severe drought or worse is down from last week’s 88.7 percent and is now at 87.8 percent.
Moderate drought or worse is unchanged from last week at 97.7 percent, and abnormally dry or worse is also unchanged as it remains at 100 percent.

NCBA’s Ethan Lane Pleased to See Congressman Frank Lucas Back on 2023 Farm Bill Committee
|
At the National Association of Farm Broadcasters’ annual trade talk for 2022, I caught up with National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Vice President of Government Affairs, Ethan Lane, talking about the 2023 Farm Bill and concerns for the cattle industry going forward.
Regarding Congressman Frank Lucas being back on the Farm Bill committee in 2023, Lane said that Lucas will be a valuable resource as he has a great understanding of the Farm Bill.
“He will be a fantastic resource for Chairman Thompson coming into this, and we are sure excited to see him back in that conversation,” Lane said. “There are very few people in Washington that are as good a friend of the cattle industry as Frank Lucas is, and we are excited to have him back in this arena.”
NCBA priorities for the 2023 Farm Bill, Lane said, involve continuing to focus on holding together programs that were in the last farm bill. One program that is top of mind, Ethan said, is keeping the vaccine bank for foot and mouth disease funded and growing.
Risk management for producers, Lane said, has become a big issue around the country. Cow calf producers are asking for more tools, Lane added, and they are seeing a dramatic increase in the use of the tools that are available.

Kim Anderson Sees Crop Prices Holding for Time Being
|
This Week on SUNUP is Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist Kim Anderson. During this week’s edition, Anderson talks about the latest in the commodity markets.
“Wheat was a little more active than the other markets this week,” Anderson said. “You look at about a 35-cent price range for wheat prices from $8.90 up to $9.25 end of the week in the middle there somewhere.”
On corn, Anderson said only 11 cents moved from the bottom to the top. Corn moved $7.27 to $7.38, he added.
Soybeans didn’t have any big moves this week, Anderson said, as they moved from $14.28 to $14.50. Cotton, Anderson said, is unchanged from last week.
“The winds aren’t blowing in the market,” Anderson said.
2022 harvest for all practical purposes is completed, Anderson said, and there are still drought issues and uncertainty about production.

Get into the Holiday Spirit with Oklahoma Christmas Tree Farms and Shopping Made in Oklahoma Gifts
|
As December edges closer, there are many opportunities to prepare for the upcoming Christmas holiday within the state of Oklahoma. Associate Farm Director, Reagan Calk, caught up with Micaela Halverson and Jenna Brinlee with the Oklahoma Department of Ag, Food, and Forestry and talked about Christmas Tree Farms across the state and some holiday shopping opportunities within the Made in Oklahoma Program.
“One of the best ways you can shop for your family or friends and shop local this holiday season is by going to madeinoklahoma.net,” Brinlee said.
There is an E-commerce page on the site where companies have uploaded their products to be shopped online, Brinlee said, and there is a “Retailers” tab on the site as well that lists stores in Oklahoma that carry Made in Oklahoma items.

Meet the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Farm Families of the Year- Today we Spotlight District Nine
|
Today we wrap up our features of the nine Farm Families of the Year from the annual meeting of the Oklahoma Farm Bureau- Today- we spotlight District Nine.
Tom and Jane Imgarten have a commercial cow/calf and stocker cattle operation at their home base near Red Rock, but their parcels of land are spread out over 50 miles from one side to the other. The passion for agriculture has been instilled in Tom and Jane’s children, Jerri and Wilton, as well.
“We farm alongside our son, Wilton,” Jane said. “It makes me happy that we are able to carry it on, to be out here in the country, to take care of the land and to pass it on to future generations in a better way than what we found it.”
One day, Tom and Jane hope to pass on their farm and ranch to their children and their grandchildren, just like their families did for them.
Click the video box below to learn more about their operation.

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
KC Sheperd shares the story of Joey Carter, a hard-working farmer who was widely regarded as a model citizen in a rural North Carolina town. Carter is the focus of a movie coming out in October called Hog Farmer- the Trials of Joey Carter.
He was not the type of person who ever expected to find himself caught up in the middle of a federal lawsuit involving some of the nation’s most ruthless trial lawyers and one of the world’s largest food companies.
But that’s exactly what happened when Joey’s family farm became the focal point in a series of nuisance trials that attracted national and international media attention. While his neighbors leveled charges of environmental racism in hopes of winning multi-million-dollar verdicts, Joey was left wondering how this could happen to a man who has always taken pride in playing by the rules.
