Thanksgiving Holiday Arrives
|
As our country pauses and offers Thanks over the next few days- I wanted to give you a quick review of what's open and what's not the balance of this week.
Markets, Banks, Government Offices and the great majority of businesses are off for Thanksgiving day tomorrow- Thursday. Some supermarkets are open at least in the morning for last minute items for your feast- and a few stores may be open to lure you in for a early Black Friday deal- but that is the exception.
On Friday- let the shopping begin (although most Black Friday deals have been on display a lot of this week already).
More importantly for us- markets will be open for a half day of trade- that means for Ag Futures- they open at normal times but will close an hour or so early in the noon hour. Banks and government offices will be open on Friday as well.
Livestock auction markets that normally run on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday are largely closed- but check with your local barn for their holiday plans.
I do know that OKC West in El Reno took all of this week off and will resume with their cow and bull sale next Monday. Woodward had a cow and bull turn yesterday but will not have a sale on Thanksgiving day. The Southern Oklahoma Livestock Market is closed today and tomorrow.
Finally- we will take a break from publishing our daily email on Thursday and Friday- and will return on Monday, November 28th.
We will be updating our website with any breaking agricultural news- should that happen.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving- and enjoy your families and friends as you gather and eat turkey, ham or maybe a great piece of beef!

AFBF President Zippy Duvall Talks about What Farm Bureau wants in the 2023 Farm Bill
|
At the National Association of Farm Broadcasters, Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with American Farm Bureau president Zippy Duvall.
Looking into the new year- Farm Bureau is thinking about its priorities and the challenges that come along with a new farm bill. Still, Duvall also considers this a bright spot, ” Coming out of the pandemic, everybody realizes that being able to afford food and have availability of food is important to every American. And maybe some of those families have never thought about they’re probably thinking about that now, and it’s often at the front of their minds. So when we go to Target congressmen and senators, they will be more aware of how important the farm bill is.”
Duvall said another challenge with the farm bill is that we will see over 100 congress members that have never written a Farm Bill. Still, he will be excited to see Congressman Frank Lucas back to help, “Mr. Lucas is a true American hero when it comes to Agriculture.” Duvall said Farm Bureau will be on Capital hill trying to help Lucas build relationships with those newly elected officials, “We want to make sure they understand that we’ll be a resource to them because we have the policy that comes straight from the farm.”

Thankfulness from the Arthurs
|
I asked our Oklahoma Secretary of Ag, Blayne Arthur, if she might share a few Thanksgiving words that we might, in turn, share with you- here's Secretary Arthur's thoughts and wishes:
"I am so very thankful for my family and the memories we make that I will always cherish.
"I am thankful to work with my team at the Department of Agriculture - they are people who do amazing work every day.
"I am thankful each day to be an American and an Oklahoman.
"I am always so thankful for our farmers and ranchers who even on holidays do not take a break from producing food and fiber for the world.
"How blessed we all are during this time of Thanksgiving."

Thanksgiving Through the Eyes of KC Sheperd
|
This has been a crazy year, but through trials comes grace. I’m so thankful for all of my friends and family and my church where Londyn gets to sing with the choir and take Piano Lessons. I’m Thankful for an amazing husband that fills in for me when I need to travel, or cover events.
I’m thankful that my first season of Kid pitch with Crosslee is over! (You parents & Grandparents who have set through it know what I mean!) But I’m looking forward to next season with her as a lefty pitcher!
I think this poem really puts things in perspective for us, so with that, Happy Thanksgiving!
Thankful For Many Things
I am thankful for my family,
My friends I feel the same.
Life is filled with many thanks,
Life is the perfect game.
Life is filled with treasures,
If you're a lucky one.
Be grateful and be humble,
And share them with someone.
But one thing we must remember,
We are not the one to thank.
There is a higher power here,
That we must give first rank.
I am thankful for my life,
And all that it holds.
I'm excited to see what's next for me,
Let's see how it unfolds.

NCBA Welcomes Comment Extension for Packers and Stockyards Act Rulemaking
|
This week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a 45-day extension of the comment period for the proposed rule titled, “Inclusive Competition and Market Integrity Under the Packers and Stockyards Act.” The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) welcomed the extension while urging USDA to proceed in a cautious, deliberative manner.
“While we appreciate the additional time to submit thorough comments, overall USDA should tap the brakes on this rulemaking effort,” said NCBA Senior Director of Government Affairs Tanner Beymer. “This is a significant undertaking rooted in decades of legislative, regulatory, and judicial history. Stakeholders must be afforded the opportunity to holistically evaluate the effects of both this rule and those which the Department has suggested are forthcoming.”
NCBA, along with other national livestock partners, requested an extension of the comment period last month in a letter to USDA. In addition, this coalition secured 100 bipartisan signatures on a congressional letter, led by Reps. Jim Costa (D-CA) and Steve Womack (R-AR), to USDA echoing this request.

NFU Releases 2022 Farmer’s Share of Thanksgiving Food Dollar
|
On Tuesday, National Farmers Union (NFU) released the 2022 Farmer’s Share of the food dollar for several items typically served for the Thanksgiving holiday.
“Corporate profits and consumer food costs continue to go up and up, but the share of the farmer’s share of the food dollar remains low,” said NFU President Rob Larew. “Thanksgiving is a time of family and community, often centered around food, but thanks to price gouging by corporate monopolies in the food system, that meal is getting increasingly difficult to afford. NFU will continue to push back against harmful anti-competitive practices and for policies that bring fairness to farmers and consumers alike.”
Included in the 2022 Thanksgiving Farmer’s Share numbers are:
-
Turkey: Retail Price – $1.99/pound, Farmer’s Share – $0.06/pound
-
Sweet Corn, 16oz frozen: Retail Price – $2.59, Farmer’s Share – $0.44
-
Stuffing, 12oz box: Retail Price – $3.59, Farmer’s Share – $0.13
-
Boneless Ham, 2lb: Retail Price – $12.98, Farmer’s Share – $1.00
-
Mashed Potatoes, 5lb bag: Retail Price – $5.99, Farmer’s Share – $1.30
-
Apple Pie Filling, 21oz can: Retail Price – $4.99, Farmer’s Share – $1.03

From the Hays Family- Here's a Tasty Bit of Gratitude for Thanksgiving 2022
|
2022 has been a crazy (some good and some awful) year for most of us- in the case of the Hays herd- we celebrated early in the year with all of our family and several friends as Jan and I hit a milestone birthday one month apart. We also celebrated this month the birthdays of our oldest granddaughter(18) and our youngest grandson(his first!). God has blessed us so much.
But yet all around us- the world can be a pretty dark place. Literally as I started to write this final piece of today's email- there's an alert on my phone that at least 6 have been killed in a Walmart in Virginia- because of an angry, desperate shooter that had something missing in his life (Join me in praying for those families sucked into this tragedy). From a daily devotional that I had in my early morning inbox- "it doesn’t take long to realize that within our culture, and within our own hearts apart from Christ, we’re always left wanting. We are never truly satisfied.
The good news is that in Christ, we who follow and fear Him lack nothing. We have everything we need because we know that He is good. We have experienced His goodness in our lives and know that there is nothing else better in life than knowing God."
The Scripture with these thoughts is Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. –Psalm 34:8 NIV
Enjoy all the good things you taste in the next few days- but our prayer for you is that you can and will taste and see that the Lord is good.
Happy Thanksgiving to each of you that join us regularly via this email- we appreciate you and are thankful for you- and may you be blessed this Thanksgiving and upcoming Christmas season.
