Agriculture Industry Speaks out on Congressional Vote on Rail Strike
|
The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday to block a national rail strike that would have dire consequences for the nation’s economy. The vote comes as the country continues to struggle with supply-side issues and problems with key transportation hubs, including low-water levels along the Mississippi River.
A deal to avert a strike appeared imminent in recent months, but a disagreement over paid sick days put the country back on the pathway to a strike, which could have begun as early as Dec. 9. Left with no other options, Pres. Biden urged Congress to act.
The House passed a separate bill that would give rail workers seven sick days. Both bills now move to the Senate. The first is expected to pass. The fate of the second is unclear.

Oklahoma Pork Council Launches the 2022 Give-A-Ham Challenge
|
On November 29, which is Giving Tuesday, Oklahoma Pork Council Board of Directors President Angie Johnson launched the 2022 Give-A-Ham challenge with a donation to the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Oklahoma City (RMHC-OKC). Her donation included more than 950 pounds of pork product, 200 pounds of shelf-stable food items and $1,000 for future pork purchases. This donation was made possible by the partnership of Tyson Foods, The Pork Group, Ben E. Keith Foods and the Oklahoma Pork Council.
“Oklahoma pig farmers care for their local communities,” Johnson said. “As an Oklahoma pig farmer, I take pride in raising pigs and providing Oklahomans in need with nutritious pork. I am honored to be a part of this special donation.”
RMHC-OKC provides a comfortable place to stay for families of seriously ill or injured children who are receiving inpatient care from the Oklahoma Children’s Hospital. In 2021, they served 804 families representing 70 of the 77 Oklahoma counties.
“We are simply astonished by the generosity of Tyson Foods, The Pork Group, Ben E. Keith Foods and the Oklahoma Pork Council”, said Judy Reyes-Henderson, executive director of development for RMHC-OKC. “We received more than 950 pounds of pork and other food products, which is enough to feed more than 2,850 guests at our Ronald McDonald House®. Our goal is to provide the families who stay with us one hot meal each day–one less thing they will have to think about while they are caring for their critically ill child. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

Merck Creates Value for Producers and Consumers with Technology and Biopharmaceuticals
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am talking with Merck Animal Health’s Paul Koffman, about technology Merck Animal Health has been working with to help producers stay ahead of the curve when it comes to looking at animal health issues on individual animals.
“For Merck animal health, our approach has really been to look holistically at that whole health outcome,” Koffman said. “Just a few years ago, we were known specifically as a biopharmaceutical company, but over the last four or five years, we have made some significant investments in building our own technology as well as acquisitions.”
One of those technology investments, Koffman said, is an ear tag that can be used in feedlots to track the activity and temperature of cattle. Koffman said the information collected is compared to “normal” data to identify outliers.
This device can help to find symptoms two to four days earlier than a human would find them, Koffman said, resulting in improved health outcomes.
“We are also saving on that challenge that we have with finding labor,” Koffman said. “Everywhere in the United States today, we seem to have a lot of labor challenges, so really providing a lot of interesting opportunities and then bringing that together is an overarching health approach, when you think about it.”

Nutrien Ag Provides the Complete Solution for a Grower’s Acreage
|
Farm Director, KC Sheperd, visited with the Nutrien Ag North American lead for cotton, rice, and specialty crops, Frank Groves talking about this year’s cotton crop and ways Nutrien Ag can aid producers.
“It was a very challenging year for cotton producers across the entire cotton belt,” Groves said. “We have our fingers crossed that we are going to get a little rain this year and come into the season in a little better position than we were last year.”
Groves said he is excited about the portfolio products Nutrien Ag has to offer.
“Through that portfolio, I believe we have a solution for any scenario that comes up; of course, the challenge in agriculture always is you don’t have a crystal ball, and you don’t know what you are getting into,” Groves said.

CAB Insider: Demand for Premium Quality Beef High, Supply Showing Improvement
|
Cattle feeders capitalized on a tighter supply of market-ready cattle last week, confidently passing on early bids of $152/cwt. Packers came back with sharply higher bids as they competed to own inventory needed to fulfill boxed beef sales commitments.
The slaughter pace during the holiday-shortened week was impressive with a 579,000 weekly total, the largest Thanksgiving week total since 2006. Packers back-filled Thursday’s holiday void, harvesting 76,000 head of fed cattle on Saturday—50,000 more than the previous Saturday.
Despite the $3 advancement in the cash trade, the December Live Cattle futures contract closed $0.37/cwt. lower at Friday’s close versus Monday’s open. The December contract continued to reflect a disconnect from the cash trade, closing at $152.68/cwt. this Tuesday.
Carcass weights continue to increase, pushing toward an annual high as data for the week ending November 12 showed steer weights making a 6-pound advance to average 931 pounds. Steer carcasses have not been this heavy since reaching 930 pounds last January and currently matching the October 2020 record.

Update From Our Top Story This AM- Oklahoma's Delegation Splits on Rail Vote
|
The U.S. House passed a bill Wednesday to avoid a nationwide railway strike but with a split vote from Oklahoma’s Representatives.
The resolution passed on a vote of 290-137 and Reps. Tom Cole and Frank Lucas were among the 79 Republicans who supported the measure. Reps. Stephanie Bice, Markwayne Mullin and Kevin Hern opposed the measure and were joined by 126 other Republicans in the House along with 8 Democrats.
Rep. Hern issued a statement following the vote explaining that over decades in business, he successfully navigated numerous contract negotiations without the federal government’s interference.
“Just last month, Biden was bragging about his mediation over a new deal; now, the White House is begging Congress to fix it. It’s not Congress’ job to clean up the Biden Administration’s messes. A rail strike would impact every single American – no one wants it to come to that. However, these nonbinding resolutions will not get any party closer to an agreement.”

USDA Announces Permanent Status and Written Agreements Availability for Silage Sorghum Crop Insurance Coverage
|
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is enhancing crop insurance for silage sorghum producers by converting the Silage Sorghum Pilot Endorsement to permanent and allowing written agreements. These changes will take effect beginning with the 2023 crop year.
“The designation of the crop insurance endorsement for silage sorghum as a permanent policy and the ability to request written agreements will be welcome news for producers in the High Plains region,” said James Bellmon, Director of Risk Management Agency’s (RMA) Regional Office in Oklahoma City. “Our producers will appreciate another risk management tool that can help them better manage their risk and protect them against unforeseen challenges.”
RMA has offered the silage sorghum endorsement for several years as a pilot with positive feedback from producers. On Aug. 18, 2022, the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC) Board of Directors approved the changes, making the endorsement permanent and allowing written agreements so producers outside of the targeted pilot area could purchase coverage.
This endorsement attaches to the Coarse Grains Crop Provisions and extends actual production history coverage for dual-purpose sorghum varieties grown for silage.
Silage sorghum is grown on non-irrigated and irrigated acres in the High Plains region.
The Silage Sorghum Endorsement is currently available in select counties in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Impacted states served by the RMA Oklahoma Regional Office are New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Nationally, silage sorghum producers purchased 440 policies to protect nearly $29 million in liabilities in 2022.
