Chinese Consumers Continue to Grow Appetite for U.S. Beef
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am featuring comments from the United States Meat Export Federation’s Senior Vice President for the Asian Pacific, Joel Haggard, about selling U.S. beef into China in the midst of Covid-zero policies and shutdowns.
Covid-zero policies have impacted demand in China, Haggard said, because people cannot travel and must stay at home.
“It restricts their mobility,” Haggard said. “I would say the largest impact has been on restaurants, so in these lockdowns, restaurants are often told to shut down, and that takes out that food service component from demand.”
Overall demand has been resilient, Haggard said, but it would be more ideal if everything opened back up. Because of limited mobility for the people of China due to these lockdowns, Haggard said food service has gotten creative.
“In terms of E-Commerce and delivery, China is one of the most advanced in the world,” Haggard said. “They got fantastic tech there, they built out the supply chains for E-commerce out beyond the top-tier cities into the fifth-tier cities, so we now have a much larger supply chain network for our products to make it out to even the smaller fourth and fifth tier towns.”
While these lockdowns have hindered the ability of the United States to sell as many pounds of beef as they would like to China, Haggard said there is still a lot of demand out there on a per capita basis in the Chinese population. The Chinese beef consumption per household, Haggard added, is rising quickly.

NCBA Praises Senate Introduction of Protect Farmers from the SEC Act
|
Thursday, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) announced support for the Senate version of the Protect Farmers from the SEC Act, a companion bill to legislation that was previously introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Frank Lucas (R-OK).
“The Securities and Exchange Commission’s overly broad rulemaking has the potential to increase burdens on cattle producers by requiring data that is impossible to provide,” said NCBA Chief Counsel Mary-Thomas Hart. “NCBA is proud to support the Protect Farmers from the SEC Act because it ensures that federal regulators do not overstep their jurisdiction and it protects cattle producers from additional government red tape. We thank Senators Boozman and Braun for their focus on this issue.”
The Protect Farmers from the SEC Act excludes agriculture from reporting scope 3, or supply chain, greenhouse gas emissions under the Securities and Exchange Commission’s proposed climate disclosure rule. While the rule is aimed at large publicly traded companies, agricultural operations could be subjected to additional reporting as part of the supply chain for public restaurants and retailers.

Kim Anderson Sees Gentle Downtrend in Wheat Prices Since October
|
This Week on SUNUP is Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist Kim Anderson. During this week’s edition, Anderson talks about what is happening in the markets during this time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
There are many factors impacting the market, Anderson said, such as Covid in China, the value of the dollar, the war in Russia and Ukraine, and the weather.
The value of the dollar, Anderson said, has gone from about 112 to 106, improving prices on the world market.
“I think people are realizing we have got to start watching the weather,” Anderson said. “The weather is a major factor I think the market is going to start concentrating on.”
Specifically, in the wheat markets, Anderson said a gentle downtrend started around the first of October.
“You had prices up as high as $9.50; they are down now around $8.60,” Anderson said. “Over the last couple of weeks, they have been sneaking lower. We have been talking about a sideways pattern in those wheat prices, but if you will look over the entire time period, we have got a little downtrend going on there.”
Australia and Argentina are around halfway through their harvest, Anderson said, which is near expectations. Weather problems in Australia continue, he added, with flooding making it hard to move some of that wheat into the market.
Exports for wheat are relatively strong, Anderson said, and stocks are tight.

US Senate Acts Swiftly to Avoid Potential Railroad Strike- Ag Groups Cheer
|
The Senate has passed a bill to avert a nationwide rail strike that would have been catastrophic to the U.S. economy. The joint resolution passed 80-15 and codifies an agreement that was brokered by the Biden administration in September but was rejected by some of the unions.
The votes Thursday by the Senate came swiftly for the chamber where one senator can often force procedural moves to slow down a bill. The Senate voted Thursday afternoon 80-15 (with one senator voting "present") to require the 12 railroad unions to accept a contract and avoid a potential railroad strike on Dec. 9. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden who had called on Congress to act on Monday.
The Association of American Railroads, representing the businesses that would shut down, had stated a rail strike would cost the U.S. economy $2 billion a day.
Farm groups had been concerned about the impact for the movement of grain, fertilizer, ethanol and other products if the workers actually walk out. They were among hundreds of business groups that also had called on Congress to act.
“We are extremely relieved that Congress took action to head off a strike that would have had serious consequences for America’s farmers, who are grappling with an increase in input costs and barge rates due to severe drought conditions on the Mississippi River,” said NCGA President Tom Haag. “Today’s actions are an excellent example of Congress working together to get things done on behalf of the American people.”
