Mike Schulte and Kim Anderson Talk Value of 4-H and FFA Junior Wheat Show
|
Associate Farm Editor, Reagan Calk, attended the 2022 Oklahoma 4-H/FFA Junior Wheat Show Awards, where the top 25 students from both 4-H and FFA were recognized. Following the awards ceremony, Reagan visited with Mike Schulte with the Oklahoma Wheat Commission and OSU’s Dr. Kim Anderson about the event.
“This show was designed to improve wheat quality and to show our youth how wheat varieties and how managing wheat production impacts flour milling quality and how it creates value for the wheat industry,” Anderson said.
The FFA and 4-H students that participate in this program, Anderson said, start in the summer by selecting the variety of wheat and the field they want to plant their wheat in. They plant the wheat in the fall, and he added on at least 5 acres.
“They manage that wheat throughout the growing season, harvest it, and they will pick and clean five pounds of wheat,” Anderson said. “It will be judged by Dr. Brett Carver at Oklahoma State University for production and for visual appearance, then it is milled at Oklahoma State University, baked into bread, and the bread is judged.”
Mike Schulte, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, said that each year, over 16,000 dollars in scholarships are awarded to those top five 4-H and top five FFA winners.
“It is really exciting because you see kids, maybe, that grow up on wheat farms that really focus on the agronomic side of things and want to make those management decisions that are going to make them successful if they plan on coming back to the farm, or it at least sparks the idea of maybe they can do this, or they do want to come back to the farm and be in agriculture,” Schulte said.

NCBA Fights to Improve Marketing Options for Cattle Producers
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with the Vice President of Government Affairs at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Ethan Lane, about today’s beef business climate.
“Producers don’t know where the next hit is going to come from, right, we see prices finally start to recover, we see them recover faster than we would expect because of that herd liquidation, and then you have input costs come in, and take that profit right back out of the transaction again,” Lane said. “It is disheartening, I think, for a lot of producers around the country that feel like they have done everything right, they have worked on their genetics, they have improved their herds, they are making more on their cattle, and they are still not making a profit.”
After enduring many hits over the last several years, Lane said he is hopeful that cattle producers can expect to see some packing plants in the future that are producer-focused.
“Some of those business models of those new packing plants that are much more producer focused, are really working more with producers to make sure more of that beef dollar gets back to the ranch gate,” Lane said.
While hook space in the country is not an issue, Lane said there needs to be more diversified options for producers to market into. NCBA and USDA, Lane said, have both been focusing on some of the smaller packing plants to give cattle producers more options.

KC Sheperd Talks AFR Speech Contest and End of Year Policy Priorities with Scott Blubaugh
|
District winners gathered at Oklahoma State University’s Student Union this past weekend to compete for state scholarship prizes in the 77th Annual AFR speech contest. Farm Director KC Sheperd was asked to be one of the judges and caught up with AFR President Scott Blubaugh to talk about this year’s competition: “This is our state championship here at Oklahoma State. We’ve had five district conferences around the state, and the winners come here and compete for the state title, so the very best kids are here today.”
Editor's Note- AFR did not have the complete list of winners available for us to share this morning-we will have that later and will link to it when we do.
On the policy front- Blubaugh tells Sheperd AFR will be coming together this week to talk policy where they will begin working on priorities for 2023, “We have 20 policy committee members coming in throughout the state representing our four districts, and they will spend the next three months working on policy and developing that for our convention in February.”
Blubaugh said they will also start thinking about the 2023 farm bill and are happy to have Frank Lucas back on the Ag Committee again, “We are grateful that we have Frank back again because his experience is very valuable, and there’s just so many folks now on the Ag committee that have that urban-tie, and they don’t have the farm background or the farm-tie.” But, even with Congressman Lucas back on the Ag Committee, Blubaugh said it would be tough with a divided congress and a white house to complete a farm bill this year.
At the state level, Blubaugh said he expects this session to be significantly different, “It looks like our work will be on the defense this year to try and keep bad things from happening.”

AFBF and NCBA Among Groups Cheering Senate Helping to End Rail Strike
|
National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) CEO Colin Woodall released a statement following the signing of H.J. Res. 100 to avert disruptions in rail service:
“America’s cattle producers are grateful for the bipartisan effort that prevented disruptions in critical rail service across the country. A rail shutdown would have been disastrous to our supply chain, and would have interrupted the essential feed, fuel, and fertilizer shipments cattle producers need. We are pleased that this joint resolution was swiftly passed by Congress and signed into law.”
American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall commented on President Biden’s signing of legislation to avert a disastrous rail strike.
“AFBF applauds Congress and President Biden for working together to avert a rail strike. High diesel prices, a truck driver shortage, and low water levels on the Mississippi River have already made shipping conditions difficult. A rail strike would have had a devastating effect on the American economy, especially as families grapple with higher prices caused by inflation...."

Chances of Rain in the Mix this Week
|
State Climatologist Gary McManus says December is presenting a strange weather pattern with lots of chances for rain “Over the next week or so with lots of moisture wrapping around high pressure in South Texas and swinging up this way from the SW.”
McManus says don’t get your hopes up for snow, though, “There won’t be any snow through the period, even though we’re getting deeper into December. There’s just too much warm-ish air around at the surface and the mid-levels to allow us any frozen fun like that. ” McManus says we will see a couple of cold fronts, the first one tonight, then another mid-week, “The latter of which could produce some freezing rain up in N OK, but not like a huge cataclysmic ice storm since it will still quickly warm up above freezing.”
While we do certainly need the rain, McManus says we do need the rain the worst in the Northwest half of the state where the longer-term deficits are still present.
