Derrell Peel Analyzes Final Cattle on Feed Report in 2022
|
Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Market Economist Dr. Derrell Peel says that the final Cattle on Feed Report of 2022 was generally in line with what the pre report guesses were.
Perhaps the only discrepancy was a slightly higher placement number than the average per report guess. Still, the report showed fewer cattle on feed, lighter placements and stronger marketings.
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.7 million head on Dec. 1, 2022. The inventory was 3% below December 1, 2021, USDA NASS reported on Friday.
Placements in feedlots during November totaled 1.93 million head, 2% below 2021. Net placements were 1.87 million head.
Marketings of fed cattle during November totaled 1.89 million head, 1% above 2021. Marketings were the highest for November since the series began in 1996.
Peel says that the December report was the third month in a row for placements less than a year ago- as well as on feed numbers under year ago as well. He says it took longer to get to this place than he had expected- but drought has finally produced cattle numbers that will stay smaller than what the market really wants for the immediate future.

We talk about the Omnibus package which will fund the government until the end of the current fiscal year, Lucas' efforts to express Congressional displeasure with the Endangered Species listing by the Fish and Wildlife Service of the Lesser Prairie Chicken, his efforts to be a part of the House Ag Committee, the need for enabling legislation for NOAA and the National Weather Service, the tight timeline ahead to get the 2023 Farm Bill done and his frustration with the Department of Justice in not concluding their investigation into the four major US Beef Packers which began in 2020.

Statement by Secretary Tom Vilsack on the FY 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill
|
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack released the following statement today after the U.S. Senate and U.S. House passed the fiscal year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations bill, sending to President Biden’s desk several crucial investments to advance the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) priorities for rural America:
“As we wrap up a successful year advancing USDA’s priorities to build more, new and better markets for producers, tackle food and nutrition insecurity, and ensure wealth is created and stays in rural communities, I’m pleased that Congress has come together to pass the Omnibus bill that delivers some resources crucial to continuing our work on behalf of the American people.
“This funding package will support USDA’s operations and wide reach into every community across the nation and help make USDA more efficient, effective, and better equipped to advance racial justice, equity and opportunity for the customers we serve. With increases in agricultural research and investments in Rural Development, this Administration will continue to prioritize economic development and growth in rural America, and put producers at the heart of solutions to climate change, including through our Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities initiative, infrastructure, and fairer, more resilient food systems."

Angus University Holding Session on Bull Reproductive Success at Cattlemen’s Congress.
|
Breeding season is an imperative time for cattlemen and women, and you need your bulls performing at their best. Angus University will host an educational session about bull reproductive success during Cattlemen’s Congress at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 9 a.m. in the Super Barn Sale Arena. This session will provide attendees with key concepts to ensuring bulls service their herd as efficiently as possible.
“With bull buying season on the horizon, making the purchase is just the first step,” said Mark McCully, American Angus Association chief executive officer. “We’re excited to provide education from an industry expert to seedstock and commercial cattlemen alike to ensure those bulls remain healthy and fertile once they enter your pastures.”
The one-hour event will feature Dr. Randall Spare, president of Ashland Veterinary Center, Inc., who will share best management practices to maintain bull fertility. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions during a social session following the presentations at the Angus booth.

U.S. Soybeans Have Bright Future Ahead on Domestic and Foreign Fronts
|
KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is visiting with the Director of the United Soybean Board and U.S. Soybean Export Council, Lance Rezac, about innovation within the U.S. soybean industry.
Rezac said he recently traveled to Kenya with the U.S. Soybean Export Council to help promote U.S. soy on the trade mission.
“They had a ban on GMO in Kenya,” Rezac said. “Wouldn’t buy it, couldn’t let their farmers plant it, and they elected a new president, and the second day in office, he said, ‘I am a scientist, I am going with the science, and we are going to lift our GMO ban.'"
U.S. soy is working on a number of new, innovative things, Rezac said, one of those being a biodegradable plastic made out of soybean oil.
“I think that could be a really big market for soybean oil,” Rezac said. “Everybody in the country wants soybean oil to replace petroleum oil, and we could do it if we had the supply, but you know, there is such a huge demand.”

AFBF- Risk Management Tools Must be a Farm Bill Priority
|
In a time of volatility, managing risk remains a priority for farmers and ranchers, and new analysis from the American Farm Bureau Federation examines several farm bill risk management tools included in Title I, explaining their impact and importance to farmers. The analysis is part of a Market Intel series dedicated to farm bill programs, designed to inform discussions about renewing the farm bill.
“Title I of the farm bill, known as the commodity title, has provided certainty and predictability to eligible producers by reauthorizing and improving commodity, marketing loan, sugar, dairy and disaster programs,” economist Shelby Myers explains in this analysis, which is the third Market Intel focused on Title I. This article breaks down the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) programs, which provide risk management coverage based on price and revenue targets for farmers and ranchers growing commodities.
“Farmers and ranchers face risk every day,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. “It’s just part of the job. And we’re price takers, not price makers, so we can’t adjust prices to absorb losses. That’s why Congress authorized tools to help manage that risk, so the folks who keep our country fed, clothed and fueled can focus on growing their crops, taking care of their livestock, and being good stewards of the land and water we are entrusted with.”

Kara Lee with Certified Angus Beef Tells Cattlemen ‘Cut the Bull’
|
The Certified Angus Beef program is all about delivering a great eating experience to consumers- and part of that experience is letting them know that the Angus cattle that meet the standards for the CAB program have been raised the right way. I had the chance to talk about that with the CAB’s Director of Producer Engagement, Kara Lee. Kara says that one way to let consumers know that cattle are being raised in a humane, sustainable way is when the producers raising the cattle are BQA certified.
Kara Lee says that CAB has started a campaign to remind producers that the BQA program helps deliver a positive message to consumers. She says they are calling the program “Cut the Bull.” “We said Cut the Bull because if a consumer believes that any of our producers don’t care about their cattle- we know that’s bull.” Lee adds that a producer can get BQA certified and cut through the bull of any uncertainty consumers might have- allowing producers to get credit of taking care of their animals in the right way- which she adds that cattlemen and cattlewomen are already doing every single day.
CAB has set up a website Cut the Bull.Info that explains why they believe that producers who are willing to be BQA certified help the brand sell the consumer on the concept that CAB beef is not delicious but also is beef they can be confident has been raised the right way.
