Improving the Carbon Levels in Your Soil and More with Jimmy Emmons
|
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America. And our most recent Podcast in this series is all about Regenerative Ag and Ranching as we talk with Soil Health Guru Jimmy Emmons.
I sat down recently and talked regenerative agriculture and ranching with Jimmy Emmons. Jimmy is a long time resident of Leedey, OK. He is the third generation on the family farm in Dewey County. He and his wife Ginger have been farming and ranching together since 1980. They have a diverse 2000 acre cropping operation growing wheat, soybeans, sesame, sunflowers, irrigated dairy alfalfa hay, canola, grain sorghum and several cover crops for seed.
Jimmy has been monitoring soil health with soil testing since 2011 utilizing cover crops to enhance soil health.
Jimmy and Ginger also have a 250 cow/calf herd and take in yearling cattle for custom grazing on the nearly 6000 acres of native range. Ginger is the primary cattle manager in the operation. The Emmons’ utilize an adaptive multi-paddock grazing system on their range and forages grown on crop ground. They use the system to keep the native grasses and soils healthy, maximize biological diversity and optimize animal health.

National offers customers many services custom made for today’s producer. To learn more, click here for the website or call the Oklahoma City office at 1-800-310-0220.

Oklahoma Drought Conditions Unchanged from Last Week
|
Drought conditions are at a standstill in Oklahoma this week compared to last week’s numbers. Each drought category remains the same as last week’s percentages.
Exceptional drought- 11.65 percent
Extreme drought or worse- 56.13 percent
Severe drought or worse- 80.92 percent
Moderate drought or worse- 89.73 percent
Abnormally dry or worse- 98.18 percent
At the start of the calendar year, 95.08 percent of the state was in abnormally dry conditions or worse. Since that period, conditions have increased by at least three percentage points.
According to the 6–10-day precipitation outlook map, the majority of Oklahoma stands at a “near normal” percent chance of precipitation through January 7. The far western edge of the panhandle is leaning above a 33-40 percent chance of rain, and the southwest part of the state is leaning below a 33-40 percent chance of precipitation.

Cattlemen’s Congress Stands-Out for Catering to Cattle Exhibitors
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am back visiting with the Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, Blayne Arthur, about the upcoming national cattle show, Cattlemen’s Congress, from the perspective of those in the show cattle industry.
Aside from being Secretary of Agriculture for Oklahoma, Arthur is also a “show mom.”
“My kids are both very active in exhibiting cattle and really like it,” Arthur said. “My husband is, of course too, and we do get the chance to travel to what we consider all the big shows.”
Arthur said having the chance to travel with her family and compete at many national shows such as Kansas City, Louisville, and Denver has made them even more proud of Cattlemen’s Congress.
“We feel like we have had a chance to go to a lot of those national shows and see what they do well and see the caliber of exhibitors and animals that exhibit there, and we know that Cattlemen’s Congress is top tier,” Arthur said. “People bring out their best stuff.”
Many people in the show cattle industry, Arthur said, will be bringing their best to Cattlemen’s Congress.

Seed Varieties Continue to Evolve to Support Conservation Agriculture
|
At the American Seed Trade Association’s booth at the National Association of Farm Broadcaster’s convention in Kansas City, Farm Director, KC Sheperd, got the chance to visit with Eric Woofter, CEO of Star Seed, about new innovations in the seed industry going forward.
Woofter said Star Seed is known for its cover crops, native grasses, and farm seed.
“Anything that is a niche seed, Star Seed handles,” Woofter said. “The big thing we look for right now is making sure we are doing a great job supplying quality seed that is noxious weed free.”
Conservation agriculture has improved significantly over the years, Woofter said, so it is exciting to see the way farming is changing.
“Most of our producers, farmers, and ranchers right now- they are great stewards of the land, and they are changing,” Woofter said. “That is what makes this a good thing to be in.”

CHS Provides Tools to Empower Farmers to Make Successful Decisions
|
Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Intern, Cheyenne Leach, got the chance to visit with Sales and Development Manager at CHS Inc., Tim Swanson, at the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Convention in Kansas City. Leach and Swanson talk about Swanson’s role within CHS, and services CHS can provide to producers.
“We really take pride in working with the growers,” Swanson said. “We are a farmer-owned company. Just all aspects. We have different energy divisions, grain divisions- I am on the agronomy division.”
Swanson said he recently moved over the wholesale side of CHS, but he still interacts with growers often to bring them the best products to help them succeed in all that they do. One way that Swanson says CHS provides farmers with tools to help them do better each year, he said is Agellum– a full-farm planning and management solution from CHS.
Agellum integrates, aggregates, and activates a farm’s unique data from machinery apps, equipment, and more to empower better agronomic and economic decisions through planning, analysis, and collaboration.
