Governor Kevin Stitt Sees Cattlemen’s Congress Becoming Largest Cattle Show in the Country
|
At the 2023 Cattlemen’s Congress, I got the chance to catch up with Governor Kevin Stitt and talk about the third year of Cattlemen’s Congress.
The Governor talked one on one with several of the exhibitors- and offered greetings and thanks to those who have come in from 40 states to show at Congress in both the Jim Norick Arena as well as the Performance Arena on the OKC Fairgrounds.
“This is the story that I tell, and kind of an example of a state like Oklahoma that believes in freedom versus Colorado, and when they shut their state down, we were very opportunistic and actually recruited this show to Oklahoma, and you are seeing the fruits of that play out year after year, so this show is here to stay,” Stitt said. “We have got tons of exhibitors and cattle folks from all over the country spending money here in the great state of Oklahoma.”
Cattlemen’s Congress, Stitt said, has a huge economic impact on central Oklahoma and promotes the agricultural community’s way of life.
Stitt said he believes Cattlemen’s Congress will become the largest cattle show in the country.
“We think this thing will be in Oklahoma City now for over 100 years,” Stitt said.

Oklahoma Emergency Drought Commission Allocates More Dollars- Ag Secretary Blayne Arthur Pleased
|
At the meeting of the Emergency Drought Commission, KC Sheperd, Farm Director, caught up with Secretary of Agriculture, Blayne Arthur, and talked about highlights from the meeting.
Data was shared by the director of the drought commission, Trey Lam, on what has been allocated for the drought districts. While there is still a significant need for drought assistance in many districts, Arthur said it was voted to push another 4.5 million dollars out to the conservation commission that will go out to the districts.
“I think the big focus was that we all realized there is still a very significant need,” Arthur said. “There is still a lot of drought across the state of Oklahoma.”
Arthur also talked about why she is grateful for the members of the legislature who have been attending the drought meetings.
“We have had, probably, greater participation from members of the legislature in this emergency drought commission maybe than some of the things we have ever done, at least at the department of ag,” Arthur said. “We are so appreciative of that. I think I have heard from so many legislators because they have heard from their constituents- they are hearing that need still exists.”

Limousin and Lim-Flex Bringing Top-of-the-Line Beef to Consumer Plates
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with the Executive Director of the North American Limousin Foundation, Dr. Mark Anderson, about the Limousin breed’s involvement at the 2023 Cattlemen’s Congress show, including the national Limousin sale held in conjunction with the event.
Anderson said the 2023 National Limousin Sale and Ken Holloway Genetics on Ice Benefit Auction were both extremely successful. The sale jumped over 60 to 70 dollars over last year, and Junior Genetics on Ice Raised over 100,000 dollars, which he said was a record.
Around 20,000 dollars worth of scholarships are issued each year with the funds raised in the Ken Holloway Genetics on Ice Benefit Auction.
Anderson talked about the vision for continued progress in the Limousin breed over the next few years. This vision, Anderson said, starts with continuing to grow commercial demand with quality cattle.
“I know they work,” Anderson said. “We have had to battle back through some issues and at one time, we had a knock on docility, but this breed was the first one to start tracking it on EPD 20 years ago, and now they rank right at close to number one on docility. That is proof EPD’s work when you sort and cull cattle right."

Cattlemen’s Congress to be here for Years to Come
|
At the 2023 Cattlemen’s Congress show, Associate Farm Editor, Reagan Calk, caught up with Craig Sand of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Sand talks about how the show has progressed since its first year in 2020.
Sand was chosen to judge the Red Angus this week at Cattlemen’s Congress and has attended the show all three years.
Initially, Sand said Cattlemen’s Congress was created to give individuals planning on attending the National Western Livestock Show in Denver, Colorado, which was canceled due to COVID-19, a place to showcase their livestock.
“This will be here for years to come,” Sand said.
Sand said there are exhibitors all the way from Canada who have made the trip to Oklahoma City for Cattlemen’s Congress. For many cattle producers in the U.S., Sand said the show being centrally located makes it convenient for many to attend.

OSU’s Kim Anderson says Watch Today’s Crop Prices to Predict Future Crop Prices
|
This Week on SUNUP is Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist Kim Anderson. During this week’s edition, Anderson gives an overview of markets in 2022 and talks about the new year.
“Most Oklahomans have sold their 2022 crop, Anderson said, so many do not feel the need to continue to watch crop prices.
“Today’s price is the best predictor of the price in the future,” Anderson said.
Looking back on 2022, Anderson gave an overview of how those commodity prices moved throughout the year.
Next week, Anderson said the USDA will release the seeded acres report for winter wheat and canola and the first WASDE of the year will we coming out. While many are talking about the impacts of the war in Russia and Ukraine, weather, the Black Sea area, and more, Anderson said using resources such as these reports is useful as well in determining market conditions.

OKC West in El Reno had 8,347 head of cattle on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week- their first feeder/stocker trade of 2023.
According to USDA Market News- Compared to the last sale on 12/13-14/22: Feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher. Demand good for feeders. Steer and heifer calves sold 12.00-15.00 higher. Demand very good. Quality mostly average to attractive with several large strings of very attractive calves that were in very good weigh-up conditions.
Meanwhile- OKC West Manager Bill Barnhart posted these comments on Facebook about this week's trade: "The market started the new year off in good fashion this week especially on stocker weights. Slaughter cows were higher Monday, calves sharply higher Tuesday, and Feeders steady to 4 higher Wednesday. All trends compared to our last week of sales in mid December which was very good at the time. Lots of very nice quality cattle were offered this week and most were over 90 days weaned. Great demand for beef has choice boxes on another upward run as cattle feeders have finally gained leverage with the packers. Although little trade has been reported, most will price finished cattle at 157-158 this week. Due to the recent drought we should be dealing with less numbers of all cattle for many months to come. We hope everyone has a prosperous and great new year."

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
Oklahoma Farm Report's Ron Hays talks regenerative agriculture and ranching with Jimmy Emmons. Jimmy is a long time resident of Leedey, OK. He is the third generation on the family farm in Dewey County. He and his wife Ginger have been farming and ranching together since 1980. They have a diverse 2000 acre cropping operation growing wheat, soybeans, sesame, sunflowers, irrigated dairy alfalfa hay, canola, grain sorghum and several cover crops for seed.
Jimmy has been monitoring soil health with soil testing since 2011 utilizing cover crops to enhance soil health.
Jimmy and Ginger also have a 250 cow/calf herd and take in yearling cattle for custom grazing on the nearly 6000 acres of native range. Ginger is the primary cattle manager in the operation. The Emmons’ utilize an adaptive multi-paddock grazing system on their range and forages grown on crop ground. They use the system to keep the native grasses and soils healthy, maximize biological diversity and optimize animal health.
