NCBA President Don Schiefelbein sees Cattle Industry Working Together in the Midst of Regulatory Concerns
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with the president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Don Schiefelbein, at the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in New Orleans.
While this year has surely presented challenges for cattle producers, Schiefelbein said it has still been a good year.
“Nothing helps people’s attitudes (more) than higher calf prices, and that is one of the things that has really gone our way as these calf prices have kind of turned, it looks like we are going to have the upper leverage here for the next couple of years, so things look pretty good long term if we can just get that moisture that everybody needs,” Schiefelbein said.
Schiefelbein said there are still concerns in the cattle industry about market transparency, but capitalism and the marketplace are holding strong.
“Even though we went through the most crippling, most disruptive period in the history of animal production here just a couple of years ago, who would have through two years removed from that disaster situation, we would be seeing the prices we are, and again, it is that capitalism still works, we sure wish there was more competition, but capitalism still works, and things have gotten better,” Schiefelbein said.

NCBA Announces 2023 Policy Priorities
|
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) executive committee approved the organization’s policy priorities at the 2023 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, with a focus on advancing animal disease preparedness, protecting voluntary conservation programs, and defending producers from regulatory overreach.
“Our focus is helping to create opportunity for America’s cattle producers and fighting to make sure the federal government does not damage our industry,” said NCBA President-Elect Todd Wilkinson. “Cattle producers have been caretakers of the land and livestock for decades and are committed to conserving this country’s natural resources while producing high-quality beef.
NCBA’s policy priorities include:
- Securing reauthorization of animal health provisions in the 2018 Farm Bill and advocating for expanded funding of the National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasures Bank (NAVVCB) to protect against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).
- Protecting and funding EQIP, CSP and other voluntary conservation programs that incentivize science-based, active management of natural resources.
- Protecting the cattle industry from regulatory attacks under Waters of the United States, the Endangered Species Act, emissions reporting and more.

Yellowstone Co-Creator Taylor Sheridan Wanted to Tell the Story of the West and Where Food Comes From
|
The ice storm across the southern great plains almost kept the headliner for the Opening General Session of the 2023 Cattle Industry Convention from showing up- but while Taylor Sheridan, the co-creator of the hit TV show Yellowstone was not able to be in New Orleans- a zoom link allowed him to remotely be on stage as he spoke to a room full of fans from the 6666 ranch in Texas.
Sheridan told the cattle producers how he grew up on a ranch in Texas- and how he realized most consumers have no clue about how their food is produced or where it comes from. That inspired him to help create the TV show that has become the hottest program in recent years- and he hopes it gives people a honest look at western life and how food is actually produced.
The technology that we developed a love-hate relationship with during the pandemic saved the day- and Sheridan's half hour Zoom will be a long remembered highlight of the 2023 Cattle Industry Convention.

Giving Back to Help Grow Future Leaders through Give FFA Day
|
Individuals across the country can make a difference in the lives of the more than 850,000 FFA members this month by participating in Give FFA Day during National FFA Week.
For the eighth year, during National FFA Week, individuals will have an opportunity to step up and support FFA and agricultural education through Give FFA Day on Thursday, Feb. 23. Funds raised support various programs on local, state and national levels. During the 24 hours of giving, donors can donate to National FFA and the state FFA associations of their choice.
In February, we will celebrate FFA, advisors and members as part of National FFA Week, which includes giving back during Give FFA Day. For more than 90 years, the National FFA Organization has strived to make a difference in students’ lives. Donations help FFA grow the next generation of leaders. Through FFA, members can find their paths to success.
With a membership of more than 850,000, there is a need for sustained funding to provide valuable programs, events, skills training and more; through generous supporters like those on Give FFA Day, FFA members can thrive.
“Every ounce of help and support makes a huge difference in the lives of every single FFA member across the nation,” said Mary Ann Fox, an Iowa state FFA officer. “The experiences you are supporting help make members ready for the next step in their lives.”

OSU’s Ryan Desantis Offers Tree and Shrub Care Tips for Unpredictable Oklahoma Weather and Drought
|
As Oklahoma weather has been more unpredictable than usual his winter, KC Sheperd, Farm Director, is visiting with Oklahoma State University professor of natural resource ecology and management, Ryan Desantis, about how to best care for your trees and more during this time of the year.
Many different factors go into how to correctly care for your trees, Desantis said, including location and tree species.
“What I usually like to think of in terms of watering at a dormant time of year like in January would be to stick with what has been done for the past several years to several decades for that particular tree,” Desantis said.
Even though much of the state has seen warmer temperatures earlier in January, Desantis said watering a tree in the winter during drought can do more harm than good. Toward the end of winter, when there are longer periods of warmth, Desantis said it is okay to start watering trees, but doing so in the middle of winter when a warmer few days come along can “shock” the tree.
Desantis talked about how to evaluate your trees to make sure they are in good condition.
“If you have got a cedar or a pine that has orange or brown foliage and there is no green, it is pretty safe to say that tree is dead,” Desantis said. “It is too late to save that tree.”

OKC West in El Reno had just 1,377 head of cattle on Wednesday of this week- limited by storm conditions.
According to USDA Market News- Compared to last week: A strong winter storm bringing sleet and temperatures in the mid-teens to low 20’s has hampered livestock movement. Feeder steers and heifers traded mostly steady few trades 2.00-3.00 higher on limited offerings. Steer and heifer calves sold with a sharply higher undertone on limited comparable offerings. Demand good for all classes.
Manager Bill Barnhart adds these comments on the Market's Facebook page- "Another weather shortened run at the sale this week as most areas received sleet and freezing rain. However slaughter cows were sharply higher Monday with receipts becoming lighter around the country. Not enough to test the stocker or feeder market but a higher undertone was noted. The USDA inventory report came out Tuesday with no surprises. Total inventory numbers of all cattle came in at 89.3 million head nationwide, down 3% from a year ago. No live trade yet but many cattle feeders are pricing them higher."

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
Oklahoma Farm Report's Ron Hays talks regenerative agriculture and ranching with Jimmy Emmons. Jimmy is a long time resident of Leedey, OK. He is the third generation on the family farm in Dewey County. He and his wife Ginger have been farming and ranching together since 1980. They have a diverse 2000 acre cropping operation growing wheat, soybeans, sesame, sunflowers, irrigated dairy alfalfa hay, canola, grain sorghum and several cover crops for seed.
Jimmy has been monitoring soil health with soil testing since 2011 utilizing cover crops to enhance soil health.
Jimmy and Ginger also have a 250 cow/calf herd and take in yearling cattle for custom grazing on the nearly 6000 acres of native range. Ginger is the primary cattle manager in the operation. The Emmons’ utilize an adaptive multi-paddock grazing system on their range and forages grown on crop ground. They use the system to keep the native grasses and soils healthy, maximize biological diversity and optimize animal health.
As Jimmy Says- Long Live the Soil!
