Sorghum Checkoff Increases Value for Sorghum Producers as Sorghum Industry Sees Exponential Growth |
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with the Executive Director of the United Sorghum Checkoff, Norma Ritz Johnson, about adding value for sorghum producers.
Johnson said 2022 has been a tough year for sorghum producers.
“We absolutely have seen a dramatic decrease in yield,” Johnson said. “In fact, according to what USDA has pegged in their most recent report, that is 43 bushels per acre, which is just incredibly low.”
That 43 bushels per acre, Johnson said, is a low that has not been hit since 1964.
“Sorghum generally doesn’t require a lot of water and that is why it is generally planted in some of our more water-limited areas, and so naturally, those are some of the ones that are going to suffer first and maybe even longest in a drought situation,” Johnson said.
With increasing conversations about agriculture and food’s role in health, Johnson said sorghum has a particular role to play in that area.
“The world is discovering sorghum,” Johnson said. “We are beginning to see that exponential growth, and it is a good problem to have that we can’t always keep up with it.”
As the need for more sorghum production increases, Johnson said the checkoff is focusing on communicating with producers about the role sorghum can play in their cropping systems.

Oklahoma Broadband Office encourages Oklahomans to verify rural internet service |
Oklahoma Farm Bureau members are encouraged to check and verify the listed broadband internet service available in their areas on a coverage map recently released by the Federal Communications Commission.
The Oklahoma Broadband Office is encouraging all Oklahomans to check the services available at their address for accuracy to ensure the state will receive the grant money needed to provide adequate high-speed internet access to all of Oklahoma.
“We have reason to believe that some of the information listed on the site, especially in rural areas, is not accurate,” said Kirk Martin, interim director of the Oklahoma Broadband Office, in a press release on Dec. 1. “In many cases, the map lists service that is simply not available.”
The Oklahoma Broadband Office stressed the importance of accurate listings as the finalized map will determine how much money will be distributed to each state for broadband expansion. Currently, the office plans to invest more than $1 billion in both federal and state funding.
“If the final map contains bad information, thousands of Oklahomans could be left out,” Martin said in the release.
The deadline to verify service is January 13, 2023.

Michael Formica Sees Supreme Court Decision on California’s Proposition 12 by First Quarter of 2023 |
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am back with the Chief Legal Strategist for the National Pork Producer’s Council, Michael Formica, talking more about the ramifications of California’s Proposition 12.
California’s Proposition 12 is aimed to mandate that in order to sell pork products in the state of California, they must be produced to the standards proposed by the state. This is not a product safety issue, but a preference for how animals are treated.
The newest member of the U.S. Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, proposed a solution to the issue by suggesting that pork producers label their product regarding how it was produced. Formica said this idea was not well-liked by the promotors of Proposition 12.
“They don’t really like that approach because that is an indication that they are likely going to lose this,” Formica said.
Once the decision is made by the Supreme Court, Formica said they will be back at the district court for a trial.
“We are going to have to have a trial over this,” Formica said. “So, we will have the experts come in and talk about the harm that is being incurred on farms to the supply chain, and how disruptive this really is. That is going to take another year or so. We will try our hardest to keep Prop 12 from going into effect.

Rural Veterinary Shortages Create Risks for U.S. Food System |
The U.S. is facing an alarming shortfall of veterinarians to treat livestock and poultry in rural areas, threatening public health, food safety, and economic growth in communities that depend on agriculture, according to a new report commissioned by Farm Journal Foundation.
More than 500 counties across the U.S. have shortages of food animal veterinarians, according to the report, authored by Cornell University’s Dr. Clinton Neill. Today, only about 3-4% of new veterinary school graduates pursue livestock or other food-animal practice areas, a stark decline from 40 years ago when about 40% of graduates specialized in this area. Shortages stem from several factors, including high levels of education debt that have outpaced potential earnings, especially in the rural U.S. This is encouraging more veterinarians to pursue companion animal practices and work in urban and suburban areas where incomes are often higher.
“The decline in food animal veterinarians in rural areas heightens concerns for a number of risks, including food safety threats, animal disease outbreaks, the potential passing of animal diseases to human populations, and decreasing rural economic growth,” Dr. Clinton Neill said. “In essence, veterinarians protect the whole of the human and animal population, so it is critical that we have a strong pipeline of practitioners to work in rural areas.”

New livestock risk management handbook available to producers |
“Many livestock producers aren’t aware that certain financial assistance programs exist, so the main motivation behind putting the handbook together was to provide a ready reference that gives them the basic information of what’s available, so they know what questions to ask and who to ask,” Hagerman said. “Then they can go talk to the USDA or their county Extension offices to get the information and programs they need.”
The handbook is a price risk management tool with the following program sections:
- Insurance
- Disaster
- Price risk
- Futures and options
Livestock producers face a variety of risks, and they have had few tools at their disposal for managing risk, said Bart Fischer, co-director of the Agricultural and Food Policy Center at Texas A&M University and lead author of the book.

77th Annual AFR State Speech Contest Challenges Oklahoma Youth |
American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) wrapped up its annual fall speech contest series Saturday Dec. 3 at Oklahoma State University (OSU) in Stillwater.
This marks the 77th year of the statewide contest. The event has gone through many changes over the years but has always maintained its central agricultural theme. Varying by grade level, this year’s speech categories are AFR/OFU, Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, Natural Resources, and Agri-Science.
Nearly 500 students will compete in AFR district speech contests this fall, resulting in more than 160 finalists advancing to the state contest. At the state level, the top three competitors in each category receive cash awards.
“Public speaking is one of the most valuable skills young people can gain for their future careers,” said AFR Cooperative President Scott Blubaugh. “We are honored to host the 77th Annual AFR Speech Contest, which has a long-standing tradition of fostering professionalism and confidence in Oklahoma’s youth.”

National Livestock to Auction Calf Benefiting All American Beef Battalion on December 12 |
On Monday, December 12th, the Oklahoma National Stockyards will auction a calf for the benefit of the AABB, along with National Livestock providing lunch for those in attendance. The AABB crew is bringing in their cooker and will be preparing a ribeye lunch. Lunch will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the actual sale will take place at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the sale arena of the Stockyards. (Pic is of the 2021 sale)
The calf to be auctioned is again being donated by 3C Cattle Feeders and the Clyde Runyan family of Mill Creek, Oklahoma. A very special thanks go out to Penny, along with her sons Casey and Bear, who have donated the calf for 9 years. Clyde was with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam and always considered this as a privilege to be able to give back to the troops. Runyan passed away in 2019 and his family continues the legacy of donating the calf in his honor.
This is the 11th year for the National Livestock companies to be involved in supporting the AABB. With the 2021 auction bringing in more than $61,500, contributors to this event have raised over $517,500 from the annual auction of a donated calf.
Many organizations and individuals have joined together for this worthy cause each year. The efforts of many have made this successful and we thank all our partners and friends for their help. Through these auctions, approximately 51,000 troops have been fed an American ribeye steak upon their return home from deployment or prior to their deployment.

Pork Checkoff Rate Adjustment Effective Jan. 1 |
Effective Jan. 1, 2023, the Pork Checkoff rate will reduce by 5 cents to $0.35 per $100 of value. This change is a result of a resolution passed by voting delegates at the 2022 Pork Industry Forum.
Pork Checkoff payments are collected for all pigs sold with a change of ownership. This includes sales of weaned pigs, breeding age animals and at the final market destination. The Pork Checkoff is mandated by the Pork Promotion, Research, Consumer Information Act.
Payments received by NPB for pigs sold on or after the first of the year will reflect the reduced rate.
The rate change was a recommendation of the Pork Industry Vision Task Force – a group of 19 leaders from NPB, NPPC and various state associations – to ensure the pork industry’s long-term success.

Oklahoma National Stockyards had a final count of 13,925 head on Monday, December 5, 2022.
Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers unevenly steady. Demand moderate to good. Steer calves 4.00 - 7.00 higher, with instances 12.00 higher. Heifer calves over 450lbs. unevenly steady, under 450lbs 15.00- 20.00 higher. Demand good for most calves. Several attractive, Oklahoma National Stockyard annual Oklahoma Angus Association Sale offerings.

OKC West in El Reno had a total calf run on Tuesday of 6,000 head.
Compared to last week: Steer calves sold 8.00-12.00 higher, instances to as much as 15.00 higher. Heifer calves traded 6.00-10 higher. Demand very good again this week for light weight cattle suitable for grazing. Supply included: 100% Feeder Cattle (50% Steers, 1% Dairy Steers, 45% Heifers, 3% Bulls, 2% Dairy Heifers). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 28%.
