Tue, 27 Apr 2010 23:41:54 CDT
Fairview FFA member Madison McGolden was born the same year as her family's first lamb crop, and since then her passion for FFA and sheep has grown right along with her. McGolden's devotion to agriculture has earned her one of Oklahoma FFA's highest honors: a 2010 State Star in Agricultural Production. Her supervised agricultural experience program was rated the best agricultural production program among the 683 FFA members who received the State FFA Degree during the 84th State FFA Convention on April 28. With the honor, McGolden received the Governor's Trophy as well as a $2,000 cash award sponsored by Davis Farms of Guthrie, Farm Credit of East Central Oklahoma and Sirloin Club of Oklahoma.
Through her SAE program, McGolden currently owns 72 ewes, 31 lambs and one ram. "I remember walking barefoot to the barns, feeding the baby lambs, and then trying to set them up like those lambs were my show lambs," McGolden said. "As a little girl, I was intrigued by how proper feeding affected the lambs, how different rams portrayed different traits in their offspring, and how just a simple vaccination would prove to be beneficial."
McGolden said her experiences have taught her many different life lessons. "As a senior, I look back on my years spent in the Fairview FFA Chapter and I am truly glad that I became involved in such a great organization," McGolden said. "The FFA organization has taught me that there are so many different opportunities, that hard work along with a good attitude is a necessity, and how to manage my time properly."
The 18-year-old Fairview FFA member is the daughter of Vince and Jackie McGolden. Her agricultural education instructors and FFA advisors are Vince McGolden and Mindi Clark.
