Needed- More Financial Literacy Needed Down on the Farm

This past week at the Joint USDA-DOJ Workshop on Competition in Agriculture- the focus at the Alabama session was on the Poultry industry. Contract poultry growers were complaining of the lack of profit available to them in the business- and Dr. Michael Dicks agreed, at least in part.
However, Dr. Dicks, the Teacher Ag Economics Professor at Oklahoma State University, assumed the role of Teacher at the Workshop as he criticized those who are in the poultry business and don't know even the basics about their financial status.
Dr. Dicks told the Workshop participants that very few farmers or ranchers across the country have all of the financial data about their operation that they really need to operate like a business should.
