Sat, 05 Jun 2010 16:10:20 CDT
Saturday has been another hot windy day across Oklahoma- and harvest continues to make rapid progress whereever machines are available to cut wheat. The following reports are coutesy of Mike Schulte of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission from Friday afternoon- reflecting progress as we ready getting into the weekend.
Frederick area:
This area is reported to be 60 to 70 percent complete with harvest. In this area we have seen yields all over the board from mid 20's to mid 40's. Elevator managers have been making the statement that they are seeing more abandonment in this area than what was earlier predicted.
Hobart area:
This area is reported to be 50 percent complete with moisture and dockage not being an issue. Producers are in the fields and harvesting a crop reported with test weights ranging from 62 to 65 pounds. Our source called that "wonderful" and said this is the lowest humidity he can ever remember. Producers are reporting a yield average of 31 bushels per acre.
Clinton area:
Harvest is expected to be in high gear this weekend with the appearance of the custom cutter crews. Producers who cut their own are slowly taking some grain to the elevators and their product has been low moisture, with test weights averaging 61 pounds.
Lawton area:
This area is staying steady with reports of dry grain that is averaging 63 pounds for test weight.
Apache area:
Producers are saying that the crop is borderline ready, having some green still mixed in, so they aren't cutting much. At the current time, they have 38 percent humidity, no chance of rain and forecasted weekend temperatures over 100 degrees. Sources say this weekend will see major activity.
Minco area:
Producers are venturing into fields this afternoon and this weekend they predict things will amp up. The few loads that have been tested averaged 61 pounds for test weight. One farmer did report a field of Overly yielding 62 bushels per acre and it had a test weight of 64 pounds.
Chickasha area:
Reports today say things in this area are picking up and they are about 20 percent done. Test weights are ranging from 60 to 63 pounds and one producer reported yields in the 50 bushels per acre range.
Watonga area:
No reports of any wheat being taken in at this point in time.
Okarche area:
Producers are seeing decent yields with a lot of yields in the mid 30's. Test weights are ranging from 59 to 60lbs.
Kingfisher area:
Producers are just getting a good start in this area. Current reports have yields ranging from the high 20's to mid 40 range and test weights ranging from 57 to 65 pounds.
Loyal area:
Another section that is just getting started but managers predict that they will really see machines start moving on Sunday. Test weights so far are reported between 59 to 64 lbs.
Ashley area:
This area between Cherokee and Alva is again seeing more machines in the fields and producers report test weights reported to be good around 60 to 62 pounds.
Panhandle area:
Sources from the Panhandle say the wheat has started to turn but is still green in a lot of places, with predictions that they are at least a week off from beginning harvest. The irrigated wheat is predicted to be even later than that.
Harvest is moving in a lot of different areas of the state. The hot temperatures, low humidity and sunny days are really causing the wheat to ripen faster than expected. We have been hearing encouraging reports in most areas. Protein levels continue to be a big concern for most elevator managers.
