NCBA CEO Claims Progress Being Made With USDA About Status of Federation of State Beef Councils

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association has halted for now their efforts to change the structure of their organization- this in the face of questions raised by the USDA and several outside groups about how those changes will impact the Federation of State Beef Councils. The Federation has the function within the Beef Checkoff of pooling monies that come voluntarily from the State Beef Councils that they are not using in their own states. This money is then used to supplement the fifty cents of the checkoff dollar that automatically goes to the national Cattlemen's Beef Board to be spent for promotion, education and research on behalf of the US cattle industry. Those contributions come from the state beef councils and are helpful in encouraging the coordination of national beef checkoff programs with state level promotional and education efforts.

There is another function of the Federation that is not voluntary and has raised a lot of the concern from the outside groups and USDA. That's the job given the Federation to select ten members of the Beef Operating Committee that is made up of a total of twenty people. The Operating Committee has tremendous power, as they are the ones that actually say yes or no to each proposal to spend checkoff dollars that come through the CBB as well as the Federation funds.

On today's Beef Buzz, we hear from Forrest Roberts, the CEO of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, who says that even though they have suspended efforts to change the structure of the organization for the time being- they have made tremendous progress with USDA on satisfying their concerns and the concerns of the six other ag groups who have complained to USDA about NCBA's cozy relationship with the Federation.

Click here for our earlier Podcast with Forrest Roberts- where you can hear our entire 14 minute conversation with him.

We also have an audio overview from last Friday that you may want to hear as well- it includes comments from Scott George, the Chairman of the Federation Division of the NCBA about the suspension of moving forward with the governance task force recommendations. Click here for that report.

The Beef Buzz is a regular feature heard on radio stations around the state on the Radio Oklahoma Network- but is also a regular audio feature found on this website as well.
