R-CALF USA Officials Speak Out on Move of Representatives
Thu, 07 Oct 2010 17:20:41 CDT
R-CALF USA Marketing Committee Chair Dennis Thornsberry says - rural America now has proof the packer lobby has infiltrated Congress so deeply that even the President's own political party is refusing to carry out the President's campaign promise to restore competition to agricultural markets. Thornsberry was responding to the letter sent last week to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and signed by 115 U.S. Representative asking for an economic analysis of the proposed GIPSA rule designed to restore competition to U.S. livestock markets.
Meanwhile, R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard says - the congressional letter uses the pretense of wanting a new economic analysis to deliver a direct attack on the proposed rules. He says Congressmen actually attacked the GIPSA rule on the basis that USDA - fails to demonstrate the need for the rule- and - the rule is sweeping in its scope.
According to Bullard - the move is an example of deliberately interfering in the public rulemaking process by carrying out the packer lobby's strategy to delay and obfuscate the rule before the public even has time to submit their comments.
