Oklahoma Conservation Leaders Praise Frank Lucas for His Defense of Flood Control Rehab Funds
Thu, 16 Jun 2011 09:29:01 CDT
Congressman Frank Lucas has once again proven himself a champion of voluntary natural resources conservation by opposing an amendment to the 2012 Federal Agriculture Appropriations bill that would have eliminated all funding for the repair of upstream flood control dams throughout the nation according to Joe Parker, President of the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts (OACD).
"We are very proud of the stand Congressman Lucas took yesterday to ensure that there is funding is available to protect the lives and property of folks who live below upstream flood control dams, Parker said. "If this amendment had passed there would be little chance that Oklahoma or any other state could tackle the ever growing challenge of repairing our aging flood control dams without Federal help."
Parkers statement came in response to Congressman Lucas's defense yesterday of funding for the rehabilitation of upstream flood control structures provided for in the 2010 Federal Agriculture Appropriations bill. Mr. Lucas took to the floor of the House of Representatives to oppose an amendment by Congressman Paul Broun of Georgia to strip all funding from this program. After a floor speech by Congressman Lucas the Broun amendment was defeated by a voice vote.
"Oklahoma has more upstream flood control structures than any other state in the Union," Parker said. "In the next five years over 1,000 dams in our state will past their design life and will be in need of rehabilitation. This on an average costs $1 million per dam. While we all know we need to balance the Federal budget, we still have to protect the lives and property of our citizens. Mr. Lucas took a courageous stand today that will help save lives and property and we in conservation are very grateful."
