Kansas City Board of Trade has Record-Breaking Month

The Kansas City Board of Trade during the month of June traded more contracts than in any given month in the 155-year history of the exchange. New monthly volume records were set for the Hard Red Winter wheat futures contract and the exchange as a whole.


Total exchange volume traded during the month of June amounted to 809,204 contracts, breaking the previous monthly volume record of 769,034 contracts set in April 2011 by 5.2 percent.


This also marks the 12th time in the last 13 months that a new record has been set for total exchange volume in a calendar month. Total exchange volume was 30 percent greater than the previous June record of 620,982 contracts set in 2010.   


A new all-time monthly volume record was also set for the HRW wheat futures contract. A total of 772,607 contracts were traded in June, breaking the previous monthly volume record of 752,383 contracts set in August 2010. This also marks the 13th consecutive month a new calendar month record has been achieved. The previous monthly record for June was 612,733 contracts in 2010.


Record volume for the month of June was attributed to several different factors. "The index roll of positions out of the July contract to forward months and weather concerns were substantial in making this June a record month," said Mike Simmons, Chairman of the Kansas City Board of Trade. "Drought concerns in U.S. HRW wheat areas, further drought concerns in EU wheat areas, and a projected tightening of U.S. corn supplies all attributed to increased volume," added Simmons.   


Year-to-date trading volume continued to post momentous gains over 2010 trading volume, a year in which new annual volume records were set. Total exchange trading volume is 71.8 percent ahead of last year at this time, with HRW wheat futures volume running 67.4 percent ahead.


Wheat options volume traded during the month of June posted an increase of 64.2 percent compared to last month and 343.7 percent compared to June 2010.


Year-to-date trading volume compared to the end of June 2010 posted a 325.4 percent gain.
