National Farmers Union says Safety Net is a Top Priority for Next Farm Bill
Thu, 21 Jul 2011 13:58:03 CDT
National Farmers Union (NFU) President Roger Johnson addressed Kansas Farmers Union members today in Seneca, Kan., to present information about the upcoming farm bill and NFU's priorities for the legislation. Kansas Farm Service Agency Director Adrian Polansky also spoke at the event.
"With the Federal government tightening its belt, we realize that we will almost certainly have less money in this farm bill than we have previously," said Johnson. "That is why it is so important to ensure that members of our organization are on the same page, so that we are able to focus our energy on our organization's top priorities. In previous farm bills, we have advocated for what we wanted to have included. Since funds will be tighter in this farm bill, we are focusing more on what we need to have included."
Johnson emphasized that a strong safety net was one of NFU's top priorities for the next farm bill.
"A strong safety net is vital to America's family farmers and ranchers, to protect them during tough times," said Johnson. "Right now, prices are good. History has shown time and again that these prices will not last. When they do come down, they will come down hard. By providing a strong safety net in the next farm bill, it will allow family farmers and ranchers to continue producing the safest, most affordable, most abundant food supply in the world. Americans pay only 10 cents of each disposable dollar for food. It is a fantastic bargain. Part of that bargain is ensuring that farmers and ranchers are protected and able to continue producing for them."
