OSU Hosting Drought Management Meeting in McClain County

Mon, 29 Aug 2011 09:56:36 CDT

OSU Hosting Drought Management Meeting in McClain County Cattle producers in and around McClain County looking to make informed drought-related decisions should plan to attend the Sept. 1 McClain County Drought Management Meeting.

The meeting will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the new McClain County Community Service Facility, located at the fairgrounds 1721 Hardcastle Blvd. in Purcell. There is no cost to attend.

"Each session leader will speak for only about 10 minutes and then we'll be opening it up for questions from the audience, so that a producer can hopefully get answers to his or her specific operational needs," said Wes Lee, McClain County Extension director and agricultural educator.

Dr. Gene Parker, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension veterinarian and food-animal quality and health specialist, will led a session on nitrates, prussic acid and blue-green algae.

Bob LeValley, OSU Cooperative Extension area livestock specialist, will lead the discussion on forage feeding alternatives.

Mike Leverett, executive director for the Farm Service Agency in McClain and Cleveland counties, will showcase current FSA assistance programs. JC Hobbs, OSU Cooperative Extension assistant tax education and management specialist, will explain and answer questions about tax implications of drought-forced sales of livestock.

"Our four experts will be helping participants gain a better understanding about the most frequent topics currently being asked of the McClain County Extension Office," Lee said. "The information being provided is the latest available and very timely."

Anyone seeking additional information about the Sept. 1 McClain County Drought Management Meeting should contact Lee at 405-527-2174.
