Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Conference to be held Oct. 25 in Fairview

Fri, 21 Oct 2011 10:11:10 CDT

Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Conference to be held Oct. 25 in Fairview The Northwest Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Conference will take place on Oct. 25 at the Northwest Technology Center in Fairview.

"Participants can learn the latest information relative to a variety of topics that empower women to solve issues and concerns of importance to them, their families and their communities," said Jim Rhodes, Major County Extension agricultural educator.

On-site registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Sessions will run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $10 per participant. Contact the Northwest Technology Center at 580-227-3708 to reserve a seat.

"We ask participants to pre-register if possible because it really aids in our planning and helps ensure that we have sufficient numbers of meals, refreshments and conference materials on hand," Rhodes said.

Participants can choose to attend five breakout sessions in addition to the general session on estate planning for farm families.

Breakout session topics will focus on chore- and decision-making tools, farm management, taking advantage of Natural Resources Conservation Service dollars, ways to get involved in agri-tourism, managing the family farm on your own, QuickBooks versus Quicken computer software use, navigating the Farm Service Agency, getting to know your banker and getting started in agribusiness, among others.

"We have farm families who are longtime wheat growers but are interested in learning how canola and sesame might benefit their operation; we have a breakout session devoted to that topic," Rhodes said. "We'll even be discussing what happens if you die without a will, and how you can be an agricultural advocate, which is a topic of interest to an increasing number of farmers and ranchers across the nation."

Sponsors for the conference are the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, Northwest Technology Center, Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The Northwest Technology Center is located at 801 Vo Tech Drive in Fairview, near its intersection with State Highway 60.

Additional information is available at the Oklahoma Women in Ag and Small Business website or by contacting Rhodes by email at jim.rhodes@okstate.edu or by phone through the Major County Extension Office at 580-227-3786.
