OYE Grand Champion Steer Sold for Record $60,000

It was a night for a record at the top end of the 2012 Sale of Champions, while the champions right under that record sold for slightly less money than in recent years. The record was for the Grand Champion Market Steer, which was bought by a consortium of buyers for $60,000. That eclipsed the previous record of $53,000 that was paid in 2009 for the Grand Champion Steer that was shown by Ky Stierwalt of Leedey. The list of buyers for the Grand Champion Steer was a long one- and includes Governor Mary Fallin, Teners Western Wear, Bank of Western Oklahoma, Chain Ranches, Robyn Promotions and Printing, McAfee & Taft Law Firm, Bob Moore Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, Express Ranches, Premium Beef, Wynn Feeds and Natural Selection for Livestock.

The Grand Champion Barrow was sold by High School Freshman Cheyenne Gaff of Timberlake FFA- and her hog sold for $17,500 and was bought by Central States Trailer and Chesapeake Energy. Click here for our earlier story on the Grand Barrow.
The Grand Champion Market Lamb was brought into the ring by his owner- Travis Rhodes of Indiahoma FFA and it also was purchased for $17,500 by Touchstone Energy and the Daily Oklahoman. Both the Grand Barrow and Grand Lamb had sold for $20,000 the last two years. Click here for our earlier story on the Grand Lamb.
The Grand Champion Meat Goat sold for $11,500- bought by McDonalds, P&K Equipment, Industrial Ignition and Farm Credit. Braden Schovanec from the Garber FFA was the owner of the best goat in the 2012 show. That sale price was very similar to the $12,000 paid in 2011 for the Grand Meat Goat. The Reserve Grand Champion animals were sold next- details include:
Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer- Shown by Macy Griswold of Perkins-Tryon FFA and purchased for $15,000 by the Oklahoma State Fair.
Reserve Grand Champion Market Barrow- Shown by Colt Conner of the Tuttle FFA and purchased for $12,500 by Touchstone Energy, Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma, Cimarron Trailers and Supreme Show Supplies.
Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb- Shown by Luke Davis of Guthrie FFA and purchased for $10,000 by Oklahoma Farm Bureau and BancFirst.
Reserve Grand Champion Meat Goat- Shown by Lora Riley of Alva FFA and purchased for $8,000 by Showrite Feeds, Pfeiffer Goat Farm, Diamond Hats and Chesapeake Energy.
As the sale moved on down the list, it offered 208 young men and ladies a chance to grab their share of approximately $700,000 spent annually during the premium sale. The barrows, steers, wether goats and lambs in the sale represent the top market animals in the entire show. OYE officials announced that a total of 8,455 animals were shown between March 9 and 18 this year at the event- but that includes breeding stock as well as the market animals that can actually qualify for the premium auction.
