2012 Oklahoma FFA Star in Ag Placement- Garrett Sharp of Waukomis FFA

Filling big shoes is a role Waukomis FFA member Garrett Sharp has learned well during the past few years.

When Sharp’s grandfather passed away, the 18-year-old stepped up to fulfill the role of active member and leader for his Oklahoma Centennial Farm, JK Farms.

“I learned how to run all the machines,” Sharp said. “Then, after my grandfather passed away about two and a half years ago, it was my time to take his position and help maintain our family farm. He started a great centennial farm, and it’s a corporation I wanted to keep going.” Because of his dedication and love for maintaining his family farm, Sharp has secured one of Oklahoma FFA’s highest honors: the 2012 State Star in Agricultural Placement. Sharp’s supervised agricultural experience project was rated the best in agricultural placement among the 727 FFA members who received the State FFA Degree during the 86th annual State FFA Convention on May 2.

In addition to this honor, Sharp received the Governor’s Trophy and a $2,000 cash award sponsored by the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives. When not in school, Sharp operates the grain cart and tractor, working the ground of his family’s farm. Through his dedication to the farm and FFA, he has learned several life skills that he values. “My supervised agricultural experience has prepared me for life and has given me confidence that will help me continue to achieve my higher educational and career pursuits,” Sharp said. “My Ag-Ed and FFA experiences are memories that I won’t forget and have been life changing. I am very thankful that I went into this great organization.”

The Waukomis FFA member is the son of Gary and Janelle Sharp. His FFA adviser is Tim Vanover. After graduation, Garrett Sharp plans to attend Oklahoma State University and earn a degree in engineering while continuing to invest his time in agricultural organizations.
