ONLA Greenhouse Production Short Course Slated For June 20-21
Floriculture is a growing industry in Oklahoma. More and more people are taking an interest in greenhouse production.

In an effort to provide vital information to floriculture producers in the state, the Oklahoma Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA) is partnering with Oklahoma State University-OKC and OSU's Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture to host the 2012 Greenhouse Production Short Course. The event will take place June 20-21 in Oklahoma City at the John E. Kirkpatrick Horticulture Center at OSU-OKC, 400 N. Portland.

Mike Schnelle, OSU Cooperative Extension ornamental floriculture specialist, said the two-day event will offer something for seasoned growers as well as those who are new to or contemplating the growing industry.

"This short course is geared toward veteran growers, retailers and individuals who are new to or just considering getting into the floriculture industry," Schnelle said. "The group of industry professionals we'll have on hand will offer valuable information that is applicable to everyone who attends."

Becky Sellers, ONLA executive secretary, said the group is excited to offer the Greenhouse Production Short Course.

"The course is designed to educate and inspire all who work in greenhouses or hoophouses with ornamental and edible plant materials," Sellers said. "We're bringing together an impressive panel of experts to share their expertise and knowledge. We're very excited to have OSU-OKC open their doors and facilities to us, which will give us a wonderful opportunity to share in hands-on demonstrations and tours."

The two-day course will feature five educational sessions each day. The keynote speaker will be Jim Nau, manager of The Gardens at Ball. Other speakers include Todd Cavins, Sungro Horticulture; Robert Stelle, Sunrise Acres; Barry Fox and Haldor Howard, OSU-OKC; Rodd Moesel, American Plant Products; Bruce Dunn and Schnelle, OSU; and Steve Upson, The Noble Foundation.

Haldor Howard, assistant professor of horticulture at OSU-OKC, said this short course is sure to provide vital information to participants.

"These two days will provide an abundance of information about great plants, fantastic plant combinations and putting plants to their best use in Oklahoma," Howard said. "We'll be looking at the many facets of the green industry, including greenhouses, hoophouses, vegetable and flower production and landscape materials. There also will be a great opportunity for networking."

The registration fee for both days is $150 for ONLA members. Non-members may register for both days for $200. Single-day registration for ONLA members is $80 and $130 for non-members. Registration must be postmarked by June 15. For more information please go to www.oknla.org, or contact Sellers at 405-945-6737 or via email at Info@oknla.org.
