Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Seminar Scheduled for September 18th
The 2nd annual Northwest Oklahoma Women in Agriculture Seminar will take place Sept. 18 at the Northwest Technology Center in Fairview.

Jim Rhodes, Major County Extension agricultural educator, said the emphasis of the seminar is to provide information and insights useful to women who are involved in agriculture through either farming or ranching.

On-site registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Sessions will start at 10 a.m. and run through mid-afternoon. Cost is $5 per participant. Contact the Northwest Technology Center at 580-227-3708 or the Major County Extension Office at 580-227-3786 to reserve a seat.

"We ask participants to pre-register if possible because it really aids in our planning and helps ensure that we have sufficient numbers of meals, refreshments and conference materials on hand," Rhodes said.

Participants can choose to attend breakout sessions in addition to general sessions. Breakout sessions will focus on estate planning; tips for working with the Farm Service Agency; passing down family heirlooms; taking advantage of Natural Resources Conservation Service dollars; insights into managing wind, oil and gas resources; winter feeding and drought concerns for cattle; and Farm Bill updates that can affect crop insurance decisions.

Sessions will be led by experts from industry, government agencies and Oklahoma State University's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

"Dana Bessinger of the Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom program also will share practical tips about the best ways to teach agriculture to children," Rhodes said. "Carol Cowan of Watonga - National Woman in Ag winner - will present a session on the life of a farming-ranching wife."

Kerry Robertson, former news anchor for KWTV News 9 in Oklahoma City, will provide the keynote address: Communication is the Key to Success.

Debra Bouziden, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Risk Management Agency office in Oklahoma City, will conclude the day's sessions with a presentation on how women can better manage risk on the family farm and in their lives.

Sponsors for the one-day seminar are the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, Northwest Technology Center, Major and Blaine County Farm Service Agency offices and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The Northwest Technology Center is located at 801 Vo-Tech Drive in Fairview, near its intersection with State Highway 60.

Additional information about the seminar is available from Jim Rhodes at 580-227-3786.
