Agriculture Secretary Calls on Congress to Pass Farm Bill
Wed, 12 Sep 2012 17:10:00 CDT
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says American farmers need a new Farm Bill. Speaking from Washington, he called on Congress to pass legislation as quickly as possible.
"There is no more important piece of legislation that any member of Congress can work on for rural America, for farmers, producers and ranchers than passage of a farm bill this month. The credit, the disaster assistance, the export promotion, the conservation assistance, the rural development component, the energy component, it's all at risk because on September 30th, the 2008 farm bill expires.
Vilsack said without a new farm bill, producers will have a difficult time planning their operations.
"The risk we run is not having certainty in the countryside as you all are making decisions for next year. We don't know for certain that we'll have any disaster assistance for those poor livestock guys, and dairy guys and the specialty crop producers that are struggling."
