Kingfisher Overwhelms Competition and Wins Third National Livestock Judging Title in Seven Years

For the second time in three years, it was truly all about Kingfisher FFA in the Livestock Judging Contest held at the 2012 National FFA Convention. This year saw an overwhelming victory for Kingfisher in the Livestock Evaluation Contest- the team bested the second place team from California by 76 points- and they accomplished that by all four team members finishing in the top ten individual rankings- Katie Lippold was 4th, Matthew Walta was 5th, Gatlin Squires was 6th and Kaitlin Pritchett was 8th. (Pictured here is the full team from earlier this year- left to right- Katie Lippold, Gatlin Squires, Kaitlin Pritchett and Matthew Walta)

Their coach, Ag teacher Ryan Burns, is obviously proud of them- as he reports that they were the high team in Reasons, Swine, Beef and the Written Test. If anything, this Kingfisher team was even better than the 2010 team that beat second place Oregon by 69 points and place two of their team members in the top ten individuals. Click here to go back and read more about the accomplishments of that team from 2010. This is the third time in seven years that Kingfisher has won the national championship in Livestock Judging at the National FFA Convention- having also won in 2006.

The top ten individuals and the national winning team members received cash awards to recognize their success in the event. The cash awards and the livestock evaluation event are sponsored by Bayer Animal Health, SureChamp, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. and Kent Nutrition Group.

The National FFA Livestock CDE is a competitive event that tests the student's ability to select and evaluate livestock. Event components include eight evaluation classes of beef, sheep, swine, and goats; oral placement reasons on four classes; and a written exam on livestock production. A team activity, utilizing reproductive and marketing information, demonstrates the teams' livestock selection ability. Each team in the event competed at local and state levels for the privilege of representing their state at the National FFA Convention & Expo.
