The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) honored leaders in conservation at the 2013 NACD Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
John Peterson of the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District was presented with NACD's Distinguished Service Award. John has been a valuable advocate for conservation at the state and national levels. His distinguished career and service in soil and water conservation includes serving as a professional with the USDA Soil Conservation Service, as a local elected director on the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District in Fairfax County, and as Virginia's representative on the NACD Board of Directors; in addition to significant professional conservation work with a number of organizations.
NACD's Friend of Conservation Award was presented to Penny Kochtitzky of Hattiesburg, Miss. A retired public school teacher, Penny has made an impact on thousands of people during her career. Early on, she chose to make natural resources conservation a key component of her curriculum. The legacy she will leave continues on through her students, many of whom have chosen careers in areas of natural resources conservation.
The NACD/Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Olin Sims Conservation Leadership Award was presented to Kenny Reichert of Chariton, Mo. This annual award recognizes an individual, district or organization for superior service to the conservation community in promoting and leading conservation on private lands.
"The same spirit that made Olin Sims one of America's leading conservationists is alive and well and living within Kenny Reichert," said NRCS Acting Chief Jason Weller. "Like Olin Sims, Kenny Reichert sees conservation of natural resources as more than something you just do for yourself and for the benefit of your own farm or ranch. It's something you do to benefit your neighbors, community, state and country. Just as Olin Sims did, he inspires others by practicing what he preaches, generously sharing his vast experience and knowledge of conservation with individuals and groups, and testing and perfecting the latest innovations in conservation technologies. Kenny Reichert is the real deal, a true leader in natural resources conservation, and we thank him for his efforts by presenting to him this year's Olin Sims Conservation Leadership Award."
Other awards presented during NACD's Annual Meeting include:
NACD/NRCS Earth Team Award: Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District, Holton, KS
National Conservation District Employees Association (NCDEA) Outstanding District Board Member Award: Charles Holmes, Perry County SWCD, AL
