Talking Sustainability and Farm Policy with Rick Tolman, National Corn Growers Association
Wed, 27 Feb 2013 04:40:08 CST
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Corn Growers Association, Rick Tolman, talked with us at the 2013 Ag Issues Forum, which has become a "just before" tradition ahead of the annual Commodity Classic. Ag Issues is organized and sponsored by Bayer Crop Science to expose agricultural trade media to a variety of cutting edge points of view.
Tolman was a part of the program in Orlando, discussing sustainability in agriculture with Rob Kaplan, Senior Manager of Sustainability for Walmart. Tolman contends that sustainability is often used as an exclusionary filter- often claiming that being sustainable is synonymous with organic, or natural or non GMO. He says nothing is further from the truth.
We discussed his thoughts on Sustainability in agriculture, the issue of biotech labeling and the issues that swirl around getting a five year farm bill in 2013. Tolman admitted one of the problems in 2012 that was a part of the failure to get a farm bill across the finish line was the lack of urgency that Congress felt from the Countryside and from farmers over the need to enact fresh legislation. Tolman says one of the goals for Commodity Class in 2013 is to look for ways to spark more energy in rural areas that can be noticed by Congress to encourage them to get a five year farm bill completed by the end of the year.
