Eastern Redcedar Landowner Workshop Slated May 18th

Eastern redcedar trees are everywhere in Oklahoma. Left uncontrolled, the species can quickly take over.
However, once trees are established, landowners have an opportunity to provide quality wood products utilized for furniture, fences, cabinets, decking and much more. Because the eastern redcedar market tends to be quite sporadic, landowners often have a hard time connecting with the logging contractors.
To assist in bridging this gap, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension and Oklahoma Forestry Services (OFS) have teamed up to host the Eastern Redcedar Landowner Workshop May 18 in Stillwater at the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center (FAPC).
Following the indoor session at FAPC will be field demonstrations at sites near Stillwater.
"This will be a great opportunity for landowners with eastern redcedar to network with other landowners, harvesters and producers interested in utilizing the redcedar wood they have available on their lands," said Craig McKinley, OSU Cooperative Extension forestry specialist.
The workshop will provide information on the proper equipment to use, how to cut eastern redcedar for the market, managing land for alternative products, chainsaw safety and redcedar utilization options.
"The purpose of this educational workshop is to inform landowners of opportunities as well as help stimulate the eastern redcedar market by connecting landowners with producers of eastern redcedar products," said Erin Johnson, OFS staff forester.
Registration for the workshop is $25 for one and $15 for a second party. For more information on this event, visit www.forestry.ok.gov or contact McKinley, at 405-744-8065 or craig.mckinley@okstate.edu.
