More Rain Expected Tomorrow; Drought Conditions Continue to Improve
Thu, 03 Oct 2013 10:52:07 CDT
Rain is in the forecast again over much of Oklahoma with a chance of severe weather Friday night. Associate State Climatologist Gary McManus says the atmosphere is primed with moisture that is improving chances for rain and thunderstorms across much of western and northwestern Oklahoma (above).
He says a dry line in the Panhandle will move across the state along with the front triggering potentially severe storms. After that, the weekend will turn windy and cool with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s and 50s. The western Panhandle could even see its first freeze of the year.
Temperatures next week will rebound into the 70s and 80s, with the potential for another storm system at the end of the week.
The expected rain this weekend does add to the momentum of drought relief across the state. This week's drought monitor map (below) does show improving conditions across broad areas of Oklahoma. Areas of abnormally dry conditions last week improved from 92 percent to 78 percent. Actual drought coverage decreased from 49 percent to 43 percent.
McManus said that's quite an improvement over this time last year when 62 percent of the state was covered by at least abnormally dry conditions. Last year was the state's warmest on record with the driest May to December period ever.
