Brownfield Ag News is reporting that the death losses could go well above the initial estimates- "There are fears that cattle losses from the record snowstorm in western South Dakota may exceed what was originally estimated, according to Silvia Christen, executive director of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association. Based on talking to producers who had been confident of some of their stock finding shelter, she had originally guessed at 5 percent death loss from the storm. Although Christen doesn't have solid numbers yet, she is getting additional information from cattlemen.
"At this point I think we're well above five percent loss, but I'm really hesitant to make any further projections just because I don't know how far the losses have gone and how high that number might still climb," Christen told Brownfield Ag News on Wednesday. "I'm very scared of what we're still discovering out there in the fields."
